Prayer Request...UPDATED July 11, 2011

Post by Hagler »

Fellow Levergunners,

I would like to ask you all for prayers for my stepfather, Louis Mullet. For a few weeks, he has been struggling with some physical issues, namely "digestive" problems. Well, after much pain, and some tests, we found out that he has an esophogeal ulcer, a "mass" growing in his small intestine (near his stomach), and some fluid buildup (described to me as "outside of his intestine, pushing on his intestines"). There appears to be no question that he has some kind of cancer, but we await all of the test results, to find out which kind. We have been given two very different opinions of dad's chances of survival, by two doctors that each handle "giving the news" very differently.

My dad is 73 years old, and a former Marine Corp Reservist. He has been my stepdad since 1974. He could be very tough on us kids (8 children, alltogether), at times, but he would not hesitate to go far out of his way to give us anything that we needed. Carla & I got to see him & mom, just a couple of weeks ago. It was their first visit to our new house. Dad was uncomfortable, then, but we had no clue of his true condition. Right now, dad is in Terrebone General Hospital, receiving pain medication. My mom said that he is finally able to get some rest, though she is very much worried about him.

...so, again, please keep my dad in your prayers.

Shawn

Thank you all, for your kindness.

I spoke with my mother, today. She, too, thanks you for your prayers. My dad had 2 gallons of fluid drained from his body, and he is feeling better. I am unclear if the fluid came from his chest, or from his abdomen. ...but, 2 gallons of "fluid" is not good to have in either of those places. Also, we are still waiting for all of the test results to come back, so that we can figure out what to do.

I must tell you that part of ignorance of my dad's situation comes from being more than 100 miles away from him, and I cannot travel right now (because both of my vans are out of commision); and my mom seems to be more concerned with a prognosis & treatment than she is with obtaining hard copies of all of my dad's test results. While my mother may not care to know the details of my dad's illness, I certainly do. I also understand that she is very probably overwhelmed by all of this, so details may be of no interest to her.

Again, thanks for all of your prayers. I will let you know more, when I know more.

Thanks, again, for all of your prayers.

My dad came home, today. Draining that fluid (it was in his abdomen) has done wonders for him. The biopsy of his esophogeal ulcer shows NO cancer (AMEN!). We are still waiting on the results of the analysis of the "mass", and the analysis of the fluid. He is showing some appetite, and is on a liquid diet. So far, he wants to eat ice cream, pudding, lemon aid, and Ensure, though the temperature has to be moderated. Food & drink that is too cold causes him pain. Mom has offered him coffee, but he has not desired any. His doctor has suggested that he could try to eat mashed potatoes, if he wants to. Mom says that dad feels much better, resting in his own bed, stating that the hospital bed was "too small". :D

...in case you are wondering why I have not talked directly to my father, it is because he would just hand the telephone to my mother. He's not much for talking on the phone. Now, if he wants to watch TV, then I would know that he is really feeling better. :D I will let you all know more, as soon as I do.

Thanks, again,
Shawn

...well, your prayers are still needed. We still have far too many unanswered questions:

The fluid, that was drained from my dad's abdomen, is not cancerous (AMEN!). ...but we still do not have the results of the biopsy of the "mass" from his small intestine, and we still do not know where the fluid came from.

Yesterday, dad was suposed to have more "scope work" done, and he confessed to the nurse that he was having chest pains. She pipes up "how long have you been having these chest pains?"...to which dad replies "about a week". So, no colonoscopy, yesterday, but he did receive an EKG. The EKG showed nothing wrong. Today, he saw a cardiologist, and got another EKG. This one turned out differently, and showed that my dad probably had a heart attack (between yesterday's EKG & today's EKG). Dad is now back in the hospital. Mom told me that this cardiologist said that my dad has a weak heart. Unbelieveable!

Thanks, again,
Shawn

Ladies & gents,

Thanks, again, for all of your prayers. My dad's enzyme results (from the day AFTER his "heart attack") show that he did NOT have a heart attack. He had a chemical stress test today, another EKG, and blood flow measurements on his arms & legs. ALL of these tests (per mom's relating them to me) show that his heart is looking good, and he has NO blockages. He was given the go-ahead to have the upper & lower GI scope work done, then the cardiologist wants to see him, again. Also, dad is on a low-sodium diet, and he is on beta-blockers. His blood pressure is better, and his heart rate is better. I would like to get an "AMEN!", right about now (and it is welcomed), but we still do not have any answers regarding where the fluid came from, what the mass in his small intestine is, why he is still having chest pains, and why his digestion is still not right (though dad has an appetite, but feels full, quickly).

...and thanks for allowing me to relate all of this to you all. It is nice to have friends to lean on.

Hello, again.

My parents & I thank you all for your continued prayers.

My dad has gone through a lot more waiting, but he finally had the upper & lower scope tests, yesterday. The G.I. doctor removed 7 pollops, all NON-cancerous. The "mass" in dad's small intestine is, also, NON-cancerous. His ulcer is continuing to improve. ...so, another "AMEN!".

Now, we still have a few hurdles to get over: my dad had more fluid in his abdomen, so a doctor drained it. 2 gallons was collected, again. This made dad feel better. He is losing weight, because he is not eating properly. Also, a CAT scan shows "spots" in his abdomen. Dad is going to see a surgeon, next week, about these spots, and about removing that mass from his small intestine. There is still no word on where the fluid is coming from.

Thanks, again,
Shawn
