Where to get THIN shim stock?

Post by J Miller »

I have a couple rifles with sight alignment problems. It just dawned on me the sights are screw on and by shimming one side or the other I should be able to bring them up to TDC. Easy, no grinding, no messing things up. But I have no idea of where to get thin, maybe down to .001" thin shim stock.

Anybody here got sources for that kind of stuff?

Yep. That or snipped aluminum cans, or sometimes even aluminum foil!

After looking at the quantity you'd have to buy from those sites, the feeler gauge idea is probably the best.

Joe, do I gotta teach you everything? I thought you was a perfectly good redneck, but now I am beginning to wonder.

In any town in the US over 1200 population (and some smaller ones) there is a machine shop. Show up there at any time except lunch, ask if they have any shim stock, and the owner/foreman/ whoever said "waddaya want?" will probably snip ya off some from a roll and say "there ya go".

Model airplane hobby shop. A pack with .001, .0015, .003 and up in brass cost me a few bucks. Lots of small brass and aluminum tubes, angles, sheet, and such.

Aluminum beverage cans and various food cans are a good source for thin shims.
Cartridge case necks will get you some brass shims. I recently used a flattened .22 case to shim a revolver mainspring.
The retract spring from an old tape measure is a source for steel shim stock, but you will have to anneal it with fire to make it easy to work.

Shim stock in sheets from .0005" on up. Before I retired I dealt with McMaster Carr quite often. They are known for their quick shipping. You may have to type in "shim stock" in the "find" line to see it (sometimes my referrals/links don't give complete address).

I use soda cans, or aluminum foil if it needs to be even thinner. Easy to cut, and cheap.
