1895 Photo, Calamity Jane & her Rifle.
She, and I use the term loosely, doesn't look much like Doris Day to me!

Poor ol' gal is probably the subject of more misinformation and smears than any female in the history of the Old West. While she is certainly not a perfect role model for young girls to follow, she did have her good points and was known for her generosity and willingness to help out when help was called for. Certainly one of the most colorful characters in our Nations history. Here's a bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calamity_Jane

Well back then there were no "supermodels". Sure there were some lookers but when you hang out in a saloon and are always on the move I think the quality of woman goes down also.

Probably a loyal & capable friend, who'd proved herself in what was essentially, a man's world. After reading much about her, both fiction & reputedly non-fiction, I've come to the conclusion that her love affair with Wild Bill was unrequited... then again...Pitchy wrote:Wonder what Hickok saw in her, of course ole duck lips wasn`t no prize either.
RR7, she suure looks "healthy" in that pic!

I'm with Ji. Wouldn't turn either down to side me in a gunfight, but of the two, expect Jane would be more help putting up fence, splitting firewood and driving a team.

I'd be happy to have either one on my side in a gunfight, but I'll bet Jane would outlast Annie in the 'frontier homesteading' department. Heck - I'd just invite 'em both to join me and see who lasted longest...

Re: 1895 Photo, Calamity Jane & her Rifle.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that Hickok once remarked to somebody, " what use would I have for her ", and that she was actually buried beside him as a joke by some of his friends.
She lived through some wild and hard times, and most of the pretty girls of today wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes back then.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Nor most of the males.
I think I could hack it, but barely. I have no doubt it would be much more of a struggle for me than many here.

Great pictures RR7! Calamity looks kinda like she could be John Wayne's granny! I like Annie much better, but I agree with Old Savage, Lady J is far prettier!
BTW RR7, Happy Birth Day.

If most of us posted a profile picture, it would have to be a wide-angle shot.
That gal that played CJ on Deadwood sure fit the bill.

Yeah, they did a pretty good job on that Deadwood series. I'm sorry they weren't allowed to finish it.vancelw wrote:pwl44m wrote:

P.S.-I agree with the "wide angle" comment, too.
Re: 1895 Photo, Calamity Jane & her Rifle.
That looks a lot like "Calamity John" to me
Re: 1895 Photo, Calamity Jane & her Rifle.
my thoughts exactly - looks like she would arm wrestle you for a shot at the pretty girl in the saloon - or maybe just shoot you.
