New 32-40 bullet mold.

Post by Marvin S »

If anyone is interested I have worked with Tom at Accurate Mold to design a 170gr gas check bullet that will work in original Winchester rifles chambered in 32-40 cal. If your like me and have had terrible luck with everything else you might look at this one. The main problems I have had is that all the other molds have either too much full dia past the crimp groove or the nose is too fat and want to engrave the rifleing and make it hard to chamber the round. It can be seen at the online catalog at Accurate Molds and is bullet # 32-170B. I made the drawing based on dimensions from both of my 94s MFG in 1923. I have not received the mold yet but will be the first to try it.
Long Live the 32-40.

Let us know how it works for you. Might be good in my Marlin.

You may be good with the Ranch Dog for your Marlin as they are designed for them. I use the Ranch Dog in my 30-30 Winchester with good luck but have problems I mentioned in my 32 cals.

I used Ranch Dogs 32 caliber mold in Marlin and Winchester 32 Specials as well as a nice old Marlin 1893 in 32-40 that I had . All of them shot well enough for hunting and metalic silhouettes .

I also have a Mod 64 in 32WS but have not shot it yet and it may do well with the RD bullet but my 32-40s do not chamber it along with the RCBS and LEE 32-8mm designs. The plain base SAECO and Lyman will chamber but both lack a gas check, crimp groove or are tapered. This problem is not only with my 94s but also in my 1885 Hi-Wall.

I put a bit more effort into the 32-40 I had over the 32 Specials as they seemed to gobble up just about anything .

In the old 1893 32-40 I had it did well with the RD 323-170GC , the RCBS 32-170GC and the Lyman 321297 . IF they didn't want to chamber at the crimp groove I just seated them deeper and the results were fine in my rifle .

The answer to that might be rather expensive !

If I still had mine I'd offer to sell it to you for what I had in it . But it went down the road when I sold the 32's and 32-40 .

If I'm not mistaken on castboolits NOE has a group buy going for a copy of the Ranch Dog 323-170GC although it'll have conventional lube grooves rather them the Lee tumble lube grooves .

An NOE will most likely set you back $75-150 depending on how many cavities you want and whether you opt for the hollow point option .

I bought some of the Lyman 323470 bullets from Montana Bullet Works - they are have a gas check on them. I think actual weight was in the low 180s.

The shot VERY well in my Winchester 32-40 rifle with both 5744 and 3031 - I think velocities were somewhere between 1500 - 1750fps.

Good luck with the new mold though!!!

Find someone that has the Ranch dog mold, beg, borrow or buy a few bullets from it and send a couple to Tom at Accurate Molds and tell him you want a mold for that bullet..

I would bet a nickel with in ten days you will have your mold.

I have done it twice.

Good luck --J
