OT - Free Riders of Purple Sage - Z Grey (Searchable)!

Post by JohndeFresno »

Levergunners,

I located what is perhaps Zane Grey's greatest work - "Riders of the Purple Sage" - at a free download site. The great character Lassiter is introduced - which you may recall was the title of a Tom Selleck Western, inspired by the book.

I formatted it into a searchable PDF (Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format) file so that you should be able to read and print it from any computing platform. Some additional information:

1. Blank pages were added in a few spots so that the chapters all start on a facing page (odd page number - 1, 5, etc). This is for those who wish to print the document double sided to save paper, as with a regular book.

For most or all computers, you should be able to:

2. Click on any line in the Table of Contents to jump to that chapter
3. Click on Ctrl-Shift-N-3 to return to Page 3, the Table of Contents
(Hold down Ctrl and Shift and N button, then hit "3" with other finger or your nose)
4. Click on Ctrl-F and enter search information to jump to a line of text
5. Also or alternately, a "Search" box at the top should allow you to search

The document is public domain, so there are no copyright problems, even though you can still purchase the book online.

Here is my link to the book:

Enjoy!

John,

Thanks, I got it downloaded, but now how do I save it? This is not like Adobe and I can't find a "save copy to file" control.
All my browser controls says is "save page as" and I'm not sure that will save the whole book.

Thanks for sharing.

When I first saw the title of this thread, the first thing that came to mind was "Gypsy Cowboy". :D

The only copy I have dates from the 70's, and is for listening - not reading. . .

Many thanks. This was his second book, and as you said one of the best. But if you haven't read "Rainbow Trail". It's a sequel, and ties up many of the questions left at the end of the first book. Few authors can write a word picture the way Zane could. When he describes a scene, it's as if you are there looking at it yourself.

I have read the book a few times. Years ago my mother inlaw gave me some books that had been in a closet forever. Several early print Zane Grey books and one one by Stewart Edward White "Arizona All good reading.Nights",copyright 1907. Also a copy of "The Big Sky" by A.B. Gutherie Jr. 1947 copyright.
Didn't mean to highjack this.

I just finished the book last night. However, I bought it, downloaded it and read it on my smartphone. Thanks for the tip Jeepnik, I'm gonna try to find Rainbow Trail and read it; out of sequence I know but I thought the Riders book had some references to a previous book.

Brother Jim,

Here is a list of some online sites with free novels and books, frequently in more than format:

http://www.bartleby.com/

http://www.feedbooks.com/publicdomain
(Currently displayed - The Call of the Wild)

(Classics broken into chapters - apparently must read online)

(I was last looking at some Dickens novels - go to root)

Thanks , my wife came home from a thrift store with a big box of Zane's hardcover books printed in the 40's a few years ago . There is just shy of 70 books in all.She paid about a buck apiece for them. I just went to the shelf and got down these two since you gentlemen speak highly of them. Put them next to the nightstand. I should do a search to see what order I should read these in.

I thought Ed Harris and Amy Madigan starred in a version of RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. I've been trying to get a copy for years. Ed Harris was great in APPALOOSA...inspired me to go buy the next three books Robert Parker wrote in the series....RESOLUTION, BRIMSTONE, and BLUED EYED DEVIL...Robert Parker, author of SPENCER FOR HIRE, died in spring of 2010.
When they said SHARPS, I always thought BIG 50!
