Mikel and Indy

Post by 20cows »

It sounds corny. Mikel was a saddle pal. He was a friend I called my brother by choice. His kids called me uncle and mine did the the same to him.

Though he was an expert with a 1911 or a Glock, his passion was the old guns, single actions and levers. Even he never posted here, he was one of us. We lost him to cancer two years ago at 53.

I took his horse, Indy, to my place when Mikel got too ill to take care of him. I kind of inherited him from there. He was a marvelous animal, well mannered and a dream to take on the trail.

Just before Christmas, I noticed Indy had a swollen face and took him to the vet. It ultimately proved to be a massive infection working its way around the right side of his skull. We fought it for nearly two weeks, to no avail. I put him down this evening.

That sucks. Although I bet your friend greatly appreciates the fact it was you that cared for his horse. Good friends like you are hard to find.

My sympathies, 20cows. While it's sometimes really the best solution... it's a hard, hard decision. Especially hard when there's multiple connections. Knowing that you did right by your friend surely didn't make it any easier. May the Lord bless you with another good horse. I know just what you're feeling. My old mare, MissFits Poco, turns 29 next week... and has been steadily losing weight... feed just runs thru her due to tooth loss. Vet & I conferred last week and as soon as I return home, I have the same chore ahead of me. He's hoping to harvest some eggs for future use, but I ain't sure I can afford that. I got her when she was 9... Been a long, great ride! I won my first buckle on her. Knowing that I have her full sister is somewhat a relief, but at 26, she's also nearing that point.

Sorry to hear of the loss of both of your friends.....the man and the horse. Im sure they are both sorely missed. You did a good thing by taking on the horse. You were lucky to have eachother's friendship.

Sorry for your loss. Tough thing to have to do, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Hang in there and heal well.

Your a good man sir! You have honored your friend and your devotion to him has been lived out in your service to Indy. May the memories fill your heart and take away the pain soon. I wish I had a friend standing by that would step up and take care of my mule should something happen to me. It is one of my concerns. blessings.

It's kind of funny (not a laugh), but I've been spending a lot more time on Red (profile pic) since this.
