284 Win
My in-laws came to town for the annual Christmas get-together. He brought over a couple of his Savage 99s (that have provided him many years of service hunting in the mountains in Colorado). One of them is a 284 Winchester. After he asked, we did some online research, but did not find this round readily available. Does anyone know of a source where I could order him a few boxes of factory ammo?

I'm sure any reliable gun shop should be able to order for you but you may have to wait for him to get a minimum order together to get a price break. The only way to find out is ask.

Re: 284 Win
Did a quick search on line and from the lack of availability and the price gouging, it may be a good tme to think of reloading. An irony is the ready availability of 6.5_284 brass and ammo.
Re: 284 Win
Try Grice Gunshop in PA. They do not show their full product line on their website, only the current sales brochure; so you will need to call them. This is a very large retailer, & they regularly feature special runs. Currently, they are selling .284 ultra light A-Bolts, so maybe they have cartridges. Good luck.

Re: 284 Win
the .284 is a dandy cartridge. I suspect that for the cost of a few boxes of factory you could set-up to reload your own. IF Lee ever made the Lee Loader in that caliber it would be the ticket for cheap/low volume reloading, IMO.

Nate: if nothing else works for you,I'm sure I can find a couple of "excess" boxes I can sell you.( list price,I'll cover shipping). and buy back his empties,if he won't be reloading..... Nate
Re: 284 Win
Too bad about the ammo . Sounds like a heck of a lever rig for North American Game that gives you a bit more reach.

Buffalo Arms keeps .284 in stock.

Wisconsin Cartridge has some listed, and there are also several of their boxes for sale on a Gunbroker listing.

Conley Precision also carries it, at considerable cost.
I bought a 284 two weeks ago and have been going through the same thing. I finally found some brass a few days ago and will go the handload route.
Good luck.

Re: 284 Win
Brass also seems scarce, but in worst case, youcan readily get Lapua 6.5_284 @ a princely ransom. The stuff is first class and will never wear out in the average lifetime. Its easily necked up 0.020 for the 284. It'd be the sort of thing where splitting a box of 100 would be the least pain.

Re: 284 Win
If there is enough interest in loaded ammo, I would be happy to make a seasonal run of it. I would need to run at least 300 cartridges. The loading would be within standard specs, but I am somewhat flexible as to the bullet. The lot of 300 needs to be the same bullet/load. They come in 20 round plastic boxes. I can keep the cost down as low as possible with the committment of 300 cartridges. Just let me know if I can help. Feel free to post about it here and either I'll check in or I'll ask someone to report back to me.
