OT - Ruger Old Army - Lets See Them
In a tribute to the passing of the ROA in Rugers line up. Lets post some pictures of the ones you have.
I think the ROA is one of the best looking revolvers Ruger has ever made, certainly one of the most fun and cheapest to shoot!

ScottT, I wish they had the fixed sight model when I bought mine in 1986, that is one great looking ROA!
Hobie did you buy yours new in 1972?
Beautiful Horse Pistol rjohns94, you had better hang on to that one
Andrew if I remember correctly you just recently acquired yours, have you got to shoot it yet?

I bought mine from a guy on eBay. He listed it "post ban" with a orange earplug stuck in the muzzle so that the eBay gestapo wouldn't pull the auction. Paid $220 or something like that. I think it was Rob Leahy who put me on to the auction.salvo wrote:Hobie did you buy yours new in 1972?

Yep. I love it. It shot pretty good with 35g, more accurate than myself anyways. It was hard to handle with 50g but it was fun.salvo wrote:Andrew if I remember correctly you just recently acquired yours, have you got to shoot it yet?

Ajax buffalo polymer grips, leather by Sierra of London, England
As soon as I heard that the ROA was discontinued I bought this pair NIB from a dealer on Gunsamerica for $1000. I then sold the pair I had in store in the UK for $1600. The profit will be added to my federal tax rebate and used to by a Uberti 1876 and a Hiwall.
Most of the CAS shooters in the UK who use ROA's feed them with Big Lube Old Army bullets - no need to mess with wads or grease and they shoot to point of aim at 25yds.
Still can't decide if I like the black grips.

Spurgon, the ROAs are all .458 caliber.
The ".44" C&B revolvers (Colt and Remington repros) are actually .452 or .454, but they are called .44s for some reason. A lot of dealers, who aren't BP shooters, don't know the difference so they call their ROAs .44 cal.
In a logical world, the ROA would be called a .46 and the others would be called .45s, but gun calibers aren't logical.

OK, OK, I made the jump.

spurgon, I like the .45 and definately the adjustable sights. strong and give the option to be on for what ever you want to shoot or distance you prefer. I will be carrying mine afield with my Sharps 1863 next big game season. I am out hunting bushy tails with it this last week and hope to call in some fox to it also

Nice Stocks!!! All this ROA porn has got me packing up the Blackpowder guns and heading to the range. Flintlock (have to discharge the hunting load and clean it), Sharps and ROA all gonna make some smoke today. Right after I do church and take the mule out for a stroll.

No, I haven't but I think that the standard cylinder does pretty well.mad mucus wrote:QUESTION...
Has anyone used a beefed-up replacement cylinder by Classicballistx?
Mucus
This is my theory as to why Ruger discontinued this gun: Not because they were not selling them, but because people were getting around the GCA 1968 by purchasing a ROA and cylinder that takes metallic cartridges.

Well, I am going to shoot mine till it falls apart.
I took my .58 frontstuffer out today. I had not shot it in more than five years, but it put the first three in the bull in about a two inch group. That .570 dia round ball over 100gr of GOEX FFG is a hammer on hogs!
I have the Old Army sights filed to hit dead on at 25yds and I am ready for hog kiling this weekend!
