Sayonara, y'all

Post by Mike D. »

Like Sixgun, I'm bailing from levergunners for 10 days while my cousins and I hunt for trophy mulies up in the wilds of Northern CA. We will be camping along the canyon of Mill Creek in an area that is wild and uninhabited. No water other than what we pack in. The trail is only about 15 miles from civilization, but it takes a couple of hours in 4 wheel drive to access the site. We are expecting rain off and on for a few days, but our tent is nice and dry and we have an old homesteader's shack to cook and eat in. I'm responsible for dinner for 14 on Sunday, so I made a freezer clean out stew with venison, elk, duck and goose meat. It tastes mighty fine, too. Since I have already killed two bucks this year I'm gonna be mighty picky on taking anything. This time, it's horn huntin'. :D

I'm still waiting for my cousins to arrive. Do to the usually extreme ranges that we have to shoot I'll be carrying the old Remington 700 .30-06. I'll be shooting loads I made with Barnes 168 TSXs. The area is not "lead free", but my guns are all sighted to use those bullets. I'm also bringing along the .45-90 Browning carbine for maybe some close in shots. No TSXs for that one, just 300 Barnes Originals in front of 52.5 grains IMR 4198. Solid 2300 FPS and great accuracy. I was going to take my original 1886 ELTD .45-90, but won't due to impending rainy weather. I don't want that old beauty possibly getting wet and having rust issues up in the wilderness. It's strictly a dry weather hunting tool. :)

Good hunting, Mike. Keep you powder dry and your top notch on and hurry back.
