Newbie with a new addiction

Hi, I recently found this site while researching a few issues I've been having with my new found addiction. See, about a year ago I had just gotten back into shooting after 15 plus years. On a whim I purchased an old but brand new (old gun that never sold) Ruger Redhawk in .480, not really know what the caliber really was about. It wasn't long after that when I found out Bud's still had some old stock Puma's in .480 (20" round barrel) so I picked it up too. It was at that point I was hooked, I don't think a gun has ever felt so right in my hands. I started reloading again (actually I had to) for the .480 and it became my favorite plinking gun (I live in the city so not much hunting here). I've since purchased a 16" SS Rossi in 44 mag and have started reloading for it also. I've only been out to the range once with it, but his gun my take over the favorite plinking spot. Well, that is if I can work out the little issues I've been having with her, but I'll save those question for another post. I just wanted to introduce myself here.

I think the levergun disease sets in faster than BRD (black rifle disease), yet is much longer lasting.

The .480 is a serious powerhouse One of the members here who goes by "Nate Kiowa Jones" is actually a nationally recognized gunsmith who sorta' specializes (well -- spends a lot of time on) the Rossi 1892 style platform. He sells a couple of things through his website like a dvd to guide you through a moderate tuning process, among other things.
I haven't used his services yet as i dont currently have a Rossi, but i will hopefully have a Ranch Hand in my hands soon (the short barreled pistol version of a levergun) -- so i plan to try these out then

I too have a 16" Rossi .44 Mag, and it is a great deer rifle, plus just plain fun to shoot.

I have a Marble's "Bullseye" sight on it - described down the page on this thread - http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=20342. For my 20" one, I have a Williams FP with aperture removed (I prefer the 'ghost ring' effect, and it is still plenty accurate), and for a 24" Octagonal, I have the 'traditional' Tang sight (I found a Taurus brand clone of the Marble's for $29 that works just fine). Those sights are shown in the above thread also.

Welcome Eric, where's the pictures? Seriously, Rossis are a ton of fun to shoot. I've got two in 357mag, a 20" carbine and 24" octagon rifle. You might want to check out our own Nate (Steve of Steve's Gunz) as he is the Rossi specialist and can help you with an excellent DVD on how to slick up your guns.

Wow, I never would have guess I'd get such a welcome, thank you all for making me feel at home.

Streettstar, the factory .480 load is definitely a powerhouse, but my reloads are pretty tame and that's what i shoot most. A steady diet of factory loads just hurt too much, both physically and in the pocket book.

AJMD429, I was looking at the Marbles sights for a few months now. I just hadn't pulled the trigger so to speak. Are they easier to see for a 1/2 blind old fanny burp?

Tycer, COSteve, Paladin, I had lurked enough on this board to know that pix were required, err appreciated, but couldn't figure out how to do without linking to another site. Now that I'm looking at the edit tool bar here, I see buttons for Images and URLs so I'm assuming it's ok to link to a photo sharing site.

Firefuss, Chas, I completely understand that this won't be the last lever gun I acquire. I'm already looking at a Marlin Guide gun and thinking about joining the local western shooting club (forgot their name), which means a 20" barreled .357 will be in the future.

I think pretty much anything firearms related gets discussed here. Even non-firearms related, we just started an impromptu "bike pic" thread it seems when one of the Aussie members on the site got a new Harley. (about as non-firearms as you can get, but still fun). The mods even tolerate a little black rifle and semi-auto talk every so often -- but there seems to be a decided leaning towards 1911 variants and Hi-Powers

Revolvers and leverguns just go together really well, especially the companion pieces (same caliber revolver and long gun)
That Redhawk is a serious piece of shootin' iron. I always thought if you ran out of bullets, you could use it as a club pretty effectively, but there's not much out there 5 .480's won't stop, and i imagine having a big beast like that helps tame the recoil a tiny bit

They don't have the "pinhole camera" effect like a tiny aperture would, but they instead capitalize on the "ghost ring" concept, where you just focus on the front sight being on-target, and your eye will automatically center things in the rear, out-of-focus (i.e. "ghost") sight. They really DO look just like in the photo I posted, where the inner ring is hazy-but-there, and the outer one is sharper-but-still-fuzzy. Makes for a FAST sight (shoot before you line up in the center, smaller, ring) AND an ACCURATE sight (settle in a second more and let your eye line things up with the inner ring as well). I describe it as a 'conscious' process, but in fact it just 'happens'.

Try one out - for the price, they are a pretty cheap 'experiment'! Under $20 if I recall.

Streetstart, I glad to hear you don't mind talking about other types of gun or other subjects. Some boards are so focused to one specific topic in tends to get rather monotonous.

Yes, the .480 revolver is a big beast, but I load it down quite a bit. Not to say it's mild, but at least I can manage it (sort or) and can enjoy shooting it. If I only had factory loads I'd only shoot it once or twice at most, recoil is just too brutal for me.

Kimwcook, dr walker, and all the others, thank you for welcoming me. Again, I'm overwhelmed by responses I'm receiving here. I can't say I've been to another forum that's been so hospitable.

AJMD429, I can sort of picture what you're describing. I guess it's just something I'll have to give a try. Sounds like if I find I don't like them I can switch back to factory sites.


PS Please forgive me if I don't post on a regular basis. I job and home life keeps me hopping so I only get a chance to visit this board once or twice a week. If I'm posting questions I'll try to follow up as best I can.

Like the #1 Forum rule sez, we discuss most anything... politely. All the mods ask is that we label it "OT" if it ain't about leverguns. You'll see a LOT of "OT" labels. And like others have said... it almost ain't a levergun if there ain't a revolver to go with it!
