Scout mount on my Marlin

Post by TBROWN »

First time on this site so Hello Everyone.
I have a Marlin 308MXLR that I'm thinking about adding a Simmons 2-6x32 scope on a
XS sytems scout mount. Yes, I have looked at Leupold & Nikon but not really looking
to break the bank on this. Any advice or experience on this?

Welcome to the board. I and some people I know have all had good luck with the XS mount on Marlin 336's. It is a solid mount and not difficult to install.

I have a "scout" system, but used a holosight, as it was for varmint/night/farm use which typically can vary from coyote at 75 yards to possum at 10 yards. Some others will chime in with 'scope' experience.

Here's what I wound up with, although I'm looking to try the Burris Fastfire...

It may LOOK FUNNY  , but it is a truly PRACTICAL 'go-to' gun for things that "go 'bump' in the night" on an ordinary midwestern farm...

Here's my original 'post' on it - http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=23531

Remember - it is NO SIN to combine the best of 'old' (levergun) with the best of 'new' (laser, holograph, smokeless powder, etc...) - the point is "is it PRACTICAL...?". 8)

Like AJMD, I mounted a holo site in the scout position. As for the flashlight mount, though it's not shown here, I picked up one from Wild West Guns.

Truthfully, I haven't had any real utility out of the flashlight mount, but for a while we had a mountain lion prowling the canyon behind my place. Seemed like a real good idea at the time.

I've got the XS on an 1894 and really like it. If I can install it without goofing anything up, anyone can!

After seeing these holosights, I may try my ATN UltraSight on it for giggles.

And BTW, welcome!

I have the XS on my 450 Marlin and Kid#2's 336, .35 Marlin. I have a Leupold on my rifle but put a Simmons pistol scope
on the Kid's. The eye relief isn't perfect with the pistol scope but it works well.

One of these days I'll get a picture of them together.

I have the XS on a few rifles. Here with a Zeiss red dot and one with a Leopold 1.5x5 IR on my Guide Gun. I have never had a problem with them. Please excuse the 1894s condition it gets used a lot and was my truck and ATV gun for the last few years.

I have two - sorry no pics - on a .45-70 and a .444. One thing I urge you to do is test try the scope. While eye relief is long like many 'handgun' scopes, it is still critical. I have several handgun scopes that cannot be hold at arms length, but about half way. That can be done in the field with a handgun, but not on a long gun. You can either see through it or you can't.

Try it first. FWIW I have stuck with 2X Leupolds on mine. I tested and found the higher magnification just made it harder to see through them because the alignment becomes more critical. Not always possible in the field, you know?

I have a TRUGLO red dot on my 10/22 because the Simmons .22 scope gave up after about 2500 rounds. I feel the TRUGLO is too bulky for my lever even though it's deadly accurate. I now lack trust in the other Simmons on my .444, which is a Simmons 4 x32 Shotgun scope. I bought the shotgun scope specifically because it's EER, and its ok so far. I'm using Weaver low rings, and I need medium rings. I want the same scope on my 10/22 as I have on my .444 so I'll have the same sight picture. I'm still trying to decide if I can accept the look of a Burris Fastfire on my levergun. If I can't adjust to the Fastfire's look, I'll probably go with a Bushnell Trophy XLT 2 x 6 handgun scope for both rifles since it allows 9-26" of eye relief.

I have a 2x Bushnell pistol scope on mine and it works great. I seem to recall trying a 2x6 pistol scope and it not working out eye relief wise. (you couldn't use it on the higher powers IIRC)

Well, after a lot of thought and research I'm down to either a Weaver 2x28
($150 @ SWFA) or Nikon 2x20 ($200 same place). Wanting silver to match
the gun and these are the 2 best options for what I want to spend. Have a
Leupold VX-I on my 270 b/a and love it but don't want to drop the cash on
an FX-II right now.

Thanks so much to all of you for your input and advice. I'll post pics when
I get it all put together and it works. If it doesn't I'll be in my room pouting.

Thanks again

Hello everybody,
Well I made my choice. Went with Nikon 2x20. If it all works
out I'll post some pics. If it doesn't I'll be in my room pouting.

Thanks to all for your input, advice, and pics.

Help
Got everything put together folllowing what instructions I got, but back of scope won't seat
in to the ring. If I move the scope back so it seats I lose the eye relief. Using medium ht.
rings per XZ recommendations. I guess I go to high rings???

It is hard to say from your description. A pic of the set up might help. I am not sure raising the scope would help. It seems like there would be a combination of slots on the mount that would make it work out unless through bad luck the scope's length and the location of the adjustments prevent you from mounting it in the sweet spot.

Dave,
What I'm getting at is that the eyepiece of the scope is down tight to
the mount but up off the ring base when the scope is set forward to
get proper eye relief. That is with the eyepiece just about where the
barrel meets the receiver. I'm worried if high rings are high enough or
if extra high would be better. Sorry if my post last nite was confusing
but note the time of nite and forgive the fact I'd had a couple pulls of
the cork.

That doesn't sound that bad. It sounds like high would work but it is hard to say without seeing how much space you've got. The Brownells catalog lists the height from the top of the base to the inside bottom of the rings. Maybe taking a look at that would give you a good idea of what would work. I have Warne Maximas on my gun.
