O/T Re15 and the 30-30

Post by m.wun »

A little ??? for anyone.I loaded some 30-30 with FTX bullets and 29.8 gr of Re 15.
They shot very low and seemed very slow, but grouped real well. This load info was e-mailed
to me by Hornady. My speer manual lists a 150gr with 34gr as a max and I know a few load
that with the FTX.My ? is does that seem hot?I thought to start at 32gr to see where it
goes.My 29.8 load shot 6" lower at 100 than a factory 170 win PP.After reading 86ers post
on bullets Im wondering to go to old reliables.

The original load alliant put out for RL-15 was 34.1 grains for a 170 and 36 for a 150. I would start 10% less and work up. flat or round nose bullets work really good on deer and elk. danny

I ended up loading ten rounds to try.170gr Hornady FP with 31.5 gr of Re15.The Lyman book
listed a 32gr load @ 2150 as max.I would be very happy with that bullet @ 2100 or 2000.I also loaded the FTX with 32gr of Re15 and hoping for 21-2200fps.If they both are shooters
I will compare them on soaked newsprint and water bottles.I know they are not game but it
can be used to compare between them.

I got a great deal on a few thousand 180gr rn bullets a few years ago and combined with 30gr of R15, you couldn't ask for more out of any of the 30/30's I've tried them in. Sounds like your loads alittle light...Dave
