For Winchesters, The Winchester Book by George Madis.

For Marlins, Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them by William S. Brophy.

These are like MUST have books. I'm still waiting on someone to buy me the Marlin book.

Griff -

You can get that Marlin book from Wal-Mart for $54.40. That's very cheap (best price I've seen). If your local Wal-Mart store doesn't have it in stock, you can order it there and pick it up when it comes in or you can order it from the Wal-Mart website. I got mine a few weeks ago from the website and it is a great book. It'll set you straight for sure on rifle variations, dates, options, etc..

kentdep, All the above are great. The magazine that Pete44ru talks about was still listed in Hunnington's reloading catalog for 2007 or 2008. Even though it was published in about 2000. Only 5-6 bucks. Fantastic on Winchesters. OK on Marlins. They Forgot about Savage 99's and those nifty calibers. No mention of BLR's or any of the other smaller forgotten makers. Many reloading manuals from different companies and vintages are interesting. The Winchester Model 94 (The First 100 Years) By Robert C. Renneberg. Is filled with great info. But are very high priced on auctions. But I would not sell mine for even those prices. P.O Ackleys book is great. A very detailed photo of a blown up 1894 will get your attention. Ken Waters Pet Loads is a must. But a great read is Lucian Cary on Guns Copyright 1947,1948,1949&1950 (The Gun editor of True The Man's Magazine) A great article on H.M Pope The last of the great gunsmiths. Aso incuded in the one is the Ballard of J.M. Marlin. Some of the old periodicals are filled with forgotten lessons.

Thanks for the replies. I really like John Taffin's writings. Are any of the above written like Taffin? I guess what I am looking for is some custom levers. Taffin's books are about stock and modified guns. Any lever books along that line?

Very good magazine. I bought one back in 2001 and have read it at least 1000 times.
