Thoughts on donating my old/used clothing...

Post by Ray Newman »

I just had a call from a charity asking me to donate some of my clothes to the starving people throughout the world.

I told them to pee off!! Anybody who fits into my clothes isn't starving!!

When we have or come across clothing we donate it to the local thrift shop that supports a shelter. We give the worn out towels/linens to the SPCA or our vet for animal bedding. That said, I resemble your remark. It seems I have plenty of clothing that's too small for me to wear but nobody who wears my size is close to starvation!
Sincerely,

Hobie

Did you ever notice that clothing shrinks remarkably after hanging in the closet for a year or two?

I am one of the lucky, I am still the same tall thin guy ( okay I sometimes have a wee beer gut) compared to my 6 pack I had when in my 20s early 30s)Both wife and I agree a women does look at a guy's abes and a guy does look at a womens butt and say the same thing, I could bounce a Quarter of that lol! now that we are both older the Quarter just gets absorbed.? I do give cloths but only if it helps local people,do they really need a parka in Africa or India? look after the locals first is what I say.

I donate virtually all my unused/used item to the Army (The Salvation Army, aka "Miss Sally" ).

Besides, it's tax deductible. ;)

We donate a lot of clothing to Amvets. The kids are at a stage when they usually outgrow clothing before the wear it out. They need kids clothes a lot, as they can sell these to get money to fund other projects.

Don't know if this happens in the states, but a lot of charities run shops and sell donated goods. This gives them cash to use in charitable endeavours.

Thus, clothes that belonged to someone of more generous proportions, such as myself, may wind up benefiting a poor person, albeit indirectly.

I always wonder about the 5'10" 275 guy with the "will work for food" sign. To be that fat, he's got to be getting plenty to eat, but if he's working for the food, wouldn't he work the fat off?

I donated old clothes to a local shelter. It's a tax deduction and much better than throwing them away or messing with a yard sale.

At any given time, I have a few long sleeve and a few short sleeve, and a few sleeveless Tee with pockets and 3 or 4 jeans in various stages of wearing out...These are also work clothes  ...when I'm done, no one will want them. They become Thor's bedding, and rags.

I hate to admit it, i have gained 50 pounds in the last 7-8 years -- I have a closetful of old clothes that are in great condition.

Losing weight is a struggle and i am working on it -- but when i get back down to "fightin weight" -- i dont think i can in good conscious wear a bunch of clothing from the Gap and Old Navy like i did when i was in my 20's  I'll just buy new stuff with a smile on my face :D

I should probably donate that stuff -- it just takes up space and i dont really know anybody who is in my 1999 size range to give to either

Gave some of my jeans to the brother in-law for him to wear for work clothes.
He is 5'8" tall. I am 6'4" He said I will just have them shortened.
My inseam is 36" so when he told them he needed the inseams cut to 30"
Check this out!
The knee sections of all those pants looked like they almost touched the ground,
and looked like he had no shins   :D Think he still wore them. :)

Ya, I also donate stuff every once in a while to the various Orgs.

All of our old clothes go to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). We get a receipt and if you itemize when you do your taxes, beleive me, it does add up. Not to mention it good for the DAV as well.

When Bill Clinton donated used clothing including used underwear and got a tax write off I started doing the same. I just wish I good donate the underwear to Congress and get a write off.
