30-30, 1....Skunk 0

Post by Hillbilly »

I't skunk season (I guess)... we are seeing about 5 dead skunks per mile the last few mornings.

Plus we are un usually wet and soggy here in Central Oklahoma. Yesterday we had Pepe wander into the near pasture... how my Catahoula did not get sprayed, I will never know.

30 WCF is probably too much gun for a skunk... but it was the closest and "least secured" rifle in the closet yesterday. The shot was around 20 yards. The Skunk got full honors and a Viking Funeral out on my burn pile...I always worry about rabies in the little critters.

I really get taken aback with statements about "too much gun".

Considering the end results of using all guns. I don't know how TOO MUCH is possible. Dead is dead. The bigger the better gets the job done better,... in my pinion.

Now,... on the other side of the coin I CAN understand NOT ENOUGH GUN!

 Solution?

Carry and use the biggest you can,... the dead don't know the difference.

30-06 .220 grain has killed everything on the planet dead at least 20x over. whether it's ENOUGH GUN or not can be debated to the end of time. next skunk you shoot , play it safe and use a 06 .220gr.

There's some who'll say you should have used a whizzybang shortymag. How do you expect the gunrag writers to do a feature article on you if you keep snuffing those skunks with a mere 30-30?

Enough gun in this case means shooting the skunk far enough away that you can't smell it.

As long as you don't take the Texas heart shot on Pepe, you're probly doin' OK.

Well, I missed my chance while ago. I smelled skunk while sitting in the basement, ran upstairs and opened a bedroom window, leaned out with the light and I could see a cat in a little oak tree and a skunk at the base of the tree. I had thrown some veggie scraps there. I ran downstairs, grabbed the .22 and light and went outside. when I turned the light on the cat vaulted out of the tree and he and the skunk ran almost together to get under my shop, made it before I could get a shot off.....ol skunk is almost all white.

Dead skunk, you not sprayed, that is not a case of too much gun. Besides, it gave you a good reason to use a lever action rifle. What more could you ask for?

Somehow I don't think the Vikings worried about too much sword...
