My first reloading equipment! Yippeeeee!

Post by Bogie35 »

Since the Santa from South Dakota donated the 22 rifle I had planned for my son this Christmas, I decided to use the money I had set aside to order my first reloading equipment. I've been reading and re-reading "Modern Reloading" (second edition) by Richard Lee. I can't take it anymore, so I just ordered the Lee 50th Anniversary Kit, 35 Remington dies, and a case length gage from Midway! To quote the Santa from SD, "and away we go!". My cup runneth over!

Thanks Santa! You've made it possible for a 9 year old to get into shooting and a 44 year old to get into reloading, all in one wonderful gesture of generosity!

Do they offer a Nobel Peace Prize for contribution to the shooting sports? :D

OK, guys, you know the drill by now;
  • First, we find out by asking innocent-sounding questions what specific models of reloading gear he just bought,

Then, we start pointing out its flaws.

After that, we start convincing him there's no way he's going to turn out decent reloads with that junk.

Finally, we deluge him with conflicting, but strong, opinions on what he brands should replace it with...
Pretty soon, he'll give up on reloading, and post his stuff cheap in the 'classifieds' section, and we can snatch it up!

Just go slow, double/triple check everything, ask six people if unsure (but only believe them if at least three of them give the same answer), and - good luck finding PRIMERS...!

Wow parallel universe ! Sounds like my house.

Read the Lee book skip anything that gets too indepth . You will come back looking for more info as you get more experience. Lee got me hooked about 7 years ago and I still buy his products.

Now whatever you do don't buy Ken Water's Pet Loads book ! It will lead you down a dark path of hanging out at your reloading bench.( Because you want to find a dark corner of the basement to hide out in.)
But if your wife buys it for you as a birthday present , what can you do! It would be rude not to accept it.

Bogie, if I may offer one word of advice: reloading without a chronograph is work; reloading with one so you can "see" the results of what you do is fun! It rewards you for all your hard work. :D

So, your next purchase has to be a chronograph. Fear not, a measly $100 plus change can get you a good one. You will find that it is the best $100 you ever spent regarding your firearms hobby, believe me!

Sincerely and best wishes for Christmas!

That is the same reloading package I got. You will soon find out that you are a lot better shot than you thought you were.

Stay safe!

I would shoot my groups after load development at 300 yards to see if I had vertical stringing when I didn't have a chronograph.

Jumping into the world of reloading is like opening Pandora's box. You thought it was tough when you went to your gun store and had to chose between three different brands of ammo for your rifle/handgun. Now you've got a plethora of powders, primers, bullets, etc.. to chose from. Welcome to the wonderful world of reloading.

Welcome to the dark side! I have been reloading for 30 years and it is the most rewarding and frustratingthing I have done (other than being married) in my life. Go slow learn the process and it will be great. Take short cuts, decide the guys writing the manuals are conserative, or be careless...maybe not so great. If there is anything I can do to help ,give a shout and again welcome to reloading! Tom

I heard that Santa likes Knob Creek, and carries a 35 Remmie levergun just like Bogie. Merry Christmas everyone.

Good choice on kit! You don't need a chrony but they are very nice to have.

For the 35 Remington, loads are pretty standardized and you're not realy going to gain anything by goosing the loads anyway.

Focus on accuracy and enjoy :)

You can also use .38 caliber pistol bullets for sub-loads for small game or plinking.

Welcome to the world of frustration, confusion and sheer delight.

I can only say one thing, my friend. Primers ... Primers ... primers.

They're getten like hens teeth. Start looking around and try to keep at least 100 /200 squirled away.

I shoot a lot of Cowboy (cowboy shooting ... not real cowboys) and always have at least one brick around.

I understand they may soon become a form of currency.

Congrats and good luck.

While hunting near Spokane WA. a couple months ago we stopped in to several sporting outlets looking the primer situation over. Everyone of them had primers. Some were limiting sales to 500 per customer and others like Cabela`s were flush with mostly CCI brand.
I have not used the ones I had before stocking up for hard times.
Now I have a lifetime supply on hand. :D

Look around, they are out there. :D

Reloading/handloading is a great way to add to your shooting pleasure. Go at it slow and read all you can on the subject. If you have a question just post it here. There are just a bunch of great guys here that will be glad to help. :D :D :D
