OT - Holster question for 1875

Hi!

Just bought a used Uberti ( Rem Copy ) 1875. The one with the "underlug".

loong Barrel ( 7 1/2"?? ) and in .44-40.

It´s just now being cleaned.

The mouths of the chambers seem to be awfully tight.

My questions: what ammo should I try?

What Holster should I buy? Make and type, please!

I am leaning towards a cross draw, so I can later uprig it with a 4 3/4 SAA in a right hand holster.

Or a "Slim Jim" or Civil War type Holster in high Cavalry draw??

Any inputs welcomed!

No, I haven´t shot it yet, but all seems to work ok.

Anything I should watch out for?

I have a Uberti / Henry "one of one Thousand" with 24" bbl and STEEL case hardened frame to keep it company, and a Win 94 Cherokee, too!

As for the ammo, are you sure it's the chamber mouths or the bottleneck shoulder inside the chamber? whatcha might do is use a sharpy and mark the round all black and try it. You should be able to tell from the scratch marks just where the constriction is. What I've found with several Uberti 44-40's the shoulder is the culprit. If you are a hand loader it's relatively easy to fix. Just remove about .020" or so off the bottom of the size die so it will sit lower and push the shoulder back a bit.

As for holsters, i would say that's more personal. First you decide how you plan to use the gun then look at what would work best to that end.

Or, do like I did with these. After seeing pictures of really old gun leather with the brass and silver or brass toe caps I had these made for my 58's. These were patterned after a crossdraw designed for a single shot flinter and a straight hang slim jim.

Yes, it´s the .44-40´s shoulder in the chambers, but the portion of the neck is tight!! I fear that the chamber mouths are lower in dia than the Barrel!

What bullets would you recommend?

At least WHAT DIAMETER??

I know originally one should use .428, .44 Spec/Mag is .430, what you modern type Uberti´s use?

A BBQ Rig like thet I plan ... for my SAA in .45 Colt!

Where should I look for a Slim Jim or Cross draw or a Civil War Holster? What Leather company?

Who makes good products ( nothing fancy, please - just good leather and good workmanship ) that are reasonaby priced and ( at least partially ) "time correct"?

I plan to use Unique for some "serious" loads, if I take the gun in the woods ( where a follow up shot at a roe deer or a Boar might be necessary ). I do not plan to hunt with it, only "finishing off", if regrettably necessary.

The only way to know about the dimensions on your gun is to slug the barrel and throats and measure the slugs. My Uberti made Cattleman has tight specs, and it shoots well. I'd start with .428" bullets weighing 200grs and load them at factory velocities. That should get you in the ball park.

Those brass toe-caps look like they could have dome off the pommel holsters for pair of old single-shot dragoon pistols. That is a mighty handsome looking rig!

Have you considered making your own holster and gunbelt?

Hell, if a fumble-fingered, ham-handed old klutz like me can do it, most anyone can!

Start by ordering the Al Stolhman book on holsters from Tandy Leather. There are patterns for Slim Jim holsters, Cavalry Flap Holsters, and several types of loop-style holster.

Then buy some leather, a stitching chisel or two (a one prong and a 4 prong chisel is a good start), some thread, needles, wax, dye, a mallet, a good knife.. and some Satin Sheen.

If you are bold enough to try tooling on your first project, there are tooling patterns in the book along with a list of the needed tools.

With that long barrel, I'd go with a Slim Jim Holster with a crossdraw tilt, or make it left-handed with the belt loop canted to wear on the right side with the proper tilt.
