OT - LONESOME DOVE

I personally think that Lonesome Dove is the best western ever made, and I liked Return to Lonesome Dove, also.

But there are quite a few great westerns, and I liked most of them. It's too bad, that Hollywood doesn't make westerns much anymore.

The Return to Lonesome Dove was a different animal altogether(nowhere near the power the of the original), but given the circumstances, I thought Jon Voight did a great job with his version of Call and Rick Schroeder did another good job of being Newt. They turned a flop into something watchable.

Elmer Keith described what happened to a man who tried to hold up a town in Montana and walk off with the loot in "Hell, I was There". The townsfolk showed up with firearms and perferated the room he was holed up in and he died right there or not long after. Look at what happened to the James/Younger gang in Minnesota, or the Dalton's in Coffeeville. There is almost always someone with an ounce of courage, a Vet who had been there, done that, or an old man with a shotgun with nothing to loose to stand in the gap when needed! It's getting more and more like "High Noon" for sure, with the current crowd.

Watched it for the first time all the way through myself just this year. I think my favorite was ol' Gus plugging the guy in the stomach with his 1866 by walking the shot up to him!

Amen Doc! Many a John Wayne (and most other) Westerns are ruined for me since LD. The Cartwrights tried to make us believe they weren't packing SAAs by leaving cartridge loops off the belts!

My favorite scene, I think, is when Captain, Gus, Pea, Newt and Deets surprise the Suggs' and Jake. Favorite quotes from that scene:

LD is one of my all time favorites. I just recently rounded up all the books and started reading them too. I've read them all now except for LD and I'm about half way through it. Good stuff!

I liked the bar scene where Gus rams the bar keeps face into the bar. Then quickly followed with Cap giving that army man a whoopin. Great flick.
