OT-The stupidest thing I have ever done while hunting!

Post by rangerider7 »

My neighbor had a friend that was having trouble with coyotes coming after his dog around his house at night. I have hunted doves on his land before but was not really familiar with the area around his house and barn. So when I agreed to go over and see if I could get rid of the coyotes for him It was without scouting the area. I got there about 11:00 on a drizzly night and set up near his barn in a wet muddy pen of some kind. It was downwind and I had the barn to my back. I had a stool with me but decided to put my Foxpro on top of it to keep it dry. I had my battery powered light on the scope of my AR15. I squatted down after I started the call and turned on the red light. I haloed it out across the field in front of me keeping it high as not to spook the yotes. Sue enough it wasn't to long until I saw three sets of eyes. I let them get close enough to make sure they were yotes and not the owner's calves. As soon as I made my identification I lowered my rifle from the halo position and got one of them in my scope. Just at that moment I touched a single strand electric fence line. I almost fried my sweet peas! Wowwwww! The yotes ran off, I ran off and didn't stop till I was up near the house. I was checking to see if the crouch of my wranglers was on fire when the owner came out. "did you get them? I didn't hear a shot". I said "yes I got them". When I told him what had happened he was laughing so hard I had time to go get my Foxpro and stool with the help of my lighted rifle. When I got back he said " you need a shot of whiskey" and I agreed wholeheartedly. As we set on the drive having a few drinks, low and behold, the yotes came back. I killed all three. That was the best shooting I have ever done. I don't know if it was the shock or the whiskey that made me shoot better but I'm going to go with the latter. The former is not worth it.

Well at least the owner didn't have to shut down the fence!
(they had to when as a kid I grabbed two wires, lol. It was off when I went out)

I think electric fences are why I have issues with electricity.

 I HATE electric fences.

At the Old Cambridge (Ohio) Baptist Church, Bill M would always play Santa. Now, Bill liked his Southern Comfort pretty good, especially since he had to wait outside the back door entrance to the Apse......I was out back with him, having a smoke, when he said he's better go take a leak before they called him in. WellSir, him peeing on the electric fence and the backdoor opening for his grand entrance was about at the same time.......The congregation heard some VERY un-Stanta-like words and Me laughing till I cried. Santa had to go home. I understand The Boys were about the size of oranges the next couple days.....

That was a good one, Rangerider! :D I can just imagine THE BIG SURPRISE when you made contact.

you had me laughing for sure. The dumbest thing I have done is fall out of a tree 30 feet and crush three vertebrae, L1, L2 and L3. Spent my senior year at USNA on a back board. Missed the hunting season. :x

I think you were motivated by revenge.

Who wouldn't want to kill three fellas who tried to turn yer junk into calf-fries?

After the shock and some good whiskey, I would have been mad enough at the coyotes to want to kill them, too. I don't like surprises from electric fences after a couple of incidents as a kid. I didn't learn the first time.

I had a neighbor who let his dog run. It kept urinating on my wifes roses. A little copper wire and a car battery solved the problem. Darned dog wouldn't come near my place after that.

I guess because I was squatting down the electricity was evenly distributed between my feet and the "twins". I was sore for a couple days but had no ill effects and I don't plan on experimenting with different positions to see if there would be any other results. Thank you very much.

The stupidest thing I've done while hunting, eh?

Drove 2 hrs to the hunting area, pulled out my Browning 95 in 30-40 Krag. Pulled out the box of shells...Hmmm....303 British.

Hunt over. Drive home. Do yardwork.

This happened back in the days I was a heavy smoker - so was more than 50 years ago. I was in the mountains west of Denver hunting deer and, after two or three hours of strenuous hunting over very tough terrain, stopped and sat down on a boulder and reached my right hand inside my coat and sweater to get the cigarette pack out when - TWO - not just one - deer jumped up less than 20 feet from me and ran away - naturally - and my shooting hand could not be brought out fast enough to shoot.

Almost enough to make a guy quit smoking - but, it didn't. It was a decade later I quit for more logical reasons. I had always thought I would quit when I felt I was in the age I should - thinking the cancer doesn't come to the young. Then, I had spent some five years in internship and surgery specialty training at the county hospital for the Detroit area (Wayne County) and realized I was seeing lung cancer in patients younger than I was - going on 34 - older than average due to time out for WWII and the Korean war.

I quit but didn't have time for hunting for years later.
