OT--Allentown Pa. Show

Post by Sixgun »

Fellow Shootists,
All I can say is BE THERE!!. The Allentown show is the place to be for old leverguns, SA Colts and anything else nice and classic. I'll be there by 8 and hope to move a decent 1894 SRC in 25-35 with factory sling eyes and a 3 leaf express sight. ---------------Sixgun

Just looked up Allentown, PA and it's not as far as I thought.

Too much going on this weekend though.

Sweet 94 by the way!

I have some 25-35 brass just in case I come across one someday.

Move it? In which direction? Over a G and under 2?

Was going to go, but traffic for Homecoming at Penn State and the weekend snowstorm here in north central PA would stretch a four-hour one-way trip into six or eight, most of it on I-80 and the northeast extension of the turnpike. Maybe next time.

Great show but something tells me the dealers think we are out of the recession as prices were high. Decent '86's started at 3g's (for near junk) and climbed from there.

I did not see a whole lot of money changing hands.

Sold the 25-35 for 14 about 3 minutes after I arrived at the show. Metal was great but the wood was so-so.

Doug Turnbull had a table set up to show off some of his work. Very nice :D Too nice for me to take out in the woods. One of his workers, Keith educated me a bit and I am amazed at the work that goes into a quality restoration. Good guy to talk to and he let me handle the guns freely. He had a restored 1873 deluxe in .44, an elaborately engraved and gold inlaid 1886 in 45-70, another long forend SRC 1886 in 45-90, a Fox SxS, a few single actions, an 1876 carbine in 45-75, and a few other guns. Case colors about blind you :D ----------------------Sixgun

Why are these shows always on the weeks when I have no money?

(those would be the ones in early January through late December)

Show off his work? I don't understand all the fuss and hoo-ah about Turnbull's work.

The blueing jobs on the receivers of the guns he refinishes are atrocious -- all mottled with every color in the rainbow and MAYBE a little blue. I'd be ashamed of a blueing job like that.

Noah ;)

Noah,
I agree to a point about the end results of his work. But they really are nice, especially the engraved ones. What I cannot agree on is the price of his guns. $20,000 for a SRC 1886??? $18,000 for a '73. Here's the kicker---not much is original on the guns. Wood, mag tube, barrel, all screws have all been replaced. That leaves a refinished receiver and some small internal parts as original.

You and I both know what you can get for $20,000---------read- as NIB ORIGINAL Winchester  --------------Sixgun

My comment about Turnbull's "blueing job quality" was a bit of my trademark tongue-in-cheek "straightfacing."

Beautiful work, his color case hardening, but too rich for my blood by at least a factor of 10.

I had my first experience about 7 years ago at a Waco gun show. A guy had a restored Colt SAA for 2500. I had retired a few years before that and had decided to buy a few more Winchesters and Colts. I thought he was crazy. I ask him why he thought a restored 1st generation would be worth more than an all original 1st generation with 50% of it's finish left. He said that's what they bring. I just shook my head and walked off. I knew then things had changed since I started collecting in the 60s. I had stopped for about 12 years because I was coaching high school football and that is a 24-7 job. I still don't understand the pricing of these restored guns. :?

RR-7,
Things in the collecting field have NOT changed, concerning of course, real collectors who are educated, experienced, and have that special persona which is needed in order to cherish the old guns.
In my personal opinion, (in fact, not my opinion, but the truth) the Doug Turnbull guns appeal to the guy who has lots of serious money, likes to show off, and knows only about the old guns in the few articles in which he reads. He probably drives one of those new Camaro's, instead of a 1968 SS/RS with the raw horsepower of a big block 396 and all the aggravation it takes to keep them running.

Nothing wrong with this as Turnbull keeps 15 people fully employed which is a majorly (is that a word? :D )good thing. He will not destroy perfectly good guns but I'm sure lots of parts hit the trash can.

One thing that surely can be said for Turnbull---His restored guns have made my originals worth all that much more. --------Sixgun

In other words, those firearm enthusiasts that shop at Cabelas' Gun Library, drive expensive foreign cars, F350 diesel 4x4s, or Hummer H1s, wear Armani suits and Ferragamo shoes, and have the latest electronic PDA/phone gadgets?

They have an economy to support, just like the rest of us . . .

I can't completely denigrate Cabela's Gun Library because I have made a few very good deals from them. Not all stores are the same, and the expertise of the employees varies from region to region and store to store. Generally speaking, the less "aware" the gun specialist is, the higher the prices on common, everyday, well used pieces. Of course, there is the inveterate "gold miner" in every venue, including Cabela's. If the price isn't to your liking, give 'em a call, or look elsewhere. :)

Hey Sixgun, it was good seeing you again. There sure where a lot of goodies on that Turnbull table. I had a great weekend sitting there, listening, seeing and learning from everyone that stopped by and asked questions (and there were many!!). Keith is a great guy and really knows his stuff.

He delivered my 475 Turnbull to me on Friday. What a gun!!!!!! I took it out and fired a few rounds through it this afternoon after the show. What a fun gun to shoot, and surprisingly very tame recoil. We'll have to take her out and shoot it soon.

I also picked up a neat '76 this afternoon....28" oct barrel, 45-75, factory set trigger...should make for a fun shooter as well.

Catch you later,

Matt 'da Man,
Keith is a very good dude. Any bites on those Turnbull leverguns? Whoa! Those babies are too rich for me but.........you can shave in those case colors!

YOU are entering my domain! :D You have the Ruger single actions and I have the Winchesters. Besides Gary, now I have YOU as competition? :D

Tell me about that '76--Send me some pics as I want to see the gun I will be buying :D I'll trade you all my Flattops for it. :D --------Sixgun
