OT.. When seated next to a jerk on an airline flight

Post by Charles »

If you find yourself next to a jerk on an airplane, open you lap top, make certain he is watching, lift your eyes to heaven and then open up this site.

Charles, I was thinking about how poor public manners are nowadays after my last trip. People dress like sluts and bums to travel anymore, and their language would make a sailor in a whorehouse blush. It is a shame at how inconsiderate our society has become...

Me too. What really ticks me off is when I hold a door for someone and they just walk through and not say a word. I usually say "You're welcome." and they'll usually be shamed into saying thank you, but not always.

That is one of my pet peeves. I do the same thing, saying "you're welcome" when they walk past without so much as a nod of appreciation. I don't think I've ever had anyone shamed into saying thanks though, they just keep on walking. I told my wife the next one I get that does that, I wanted to run up behind them and put a boot to their rear and ask them where their manners went.

I am sorry, but I do not agree with requiring that someone acknowledge an act of kindness. It is nice when they do, but just because you offer a kindness it does not automatically saddle them with a debt of gratitude.

You are correct that there is no debt of gratitude. It's called common courtesy , which sadly, seems to be quite uncommon this day and age.

Charles
I realize that you are under the impression that would be something funny to do but as one who was in the air just days after 9-11-01 I can tell you that there is nothing funny about that idea.
Second if you should really do that you will find that you will be talking to some not very friendly air police, federal authorities and if you are lucky you just might get to see someone who loves you before you are to old to remember what they look like.
Third just because you have a seat next to a nothing person is no reason to get stupid, I have sat next to many people like this and it did nothing to make the flight longer or shorter
Fourth with the current dislike for terrorist you just might not make it to the ground before other passengers show you just how much they like terrorists or those who think they are funny by doing stupid things on an airplane. I have seen things get out of control on the ground and can't think of what it would be like at 35,000 feet and no place to run.
Just my thoughts and if you feel that your luck is that good that nothing will happen to you go ahead and try it but remember it is on the net so big brother already has you on a list as a problem and if you can't get a plane ticket just remember you were stupid enough to post this dumb idea.

Ho boy! I guess Charlies Brown isn't the only "humorless sort" out there. It never occured to me that anybody would take that post serious or that anybody would even think aboutg doing it. Some of you boys are so anal retentive, you couldn't drive a greasy finishing nail up your behind with a nine pound hammer. Chill, relax, take a walk, go fishing, go shooting, do something to lighten up.

Another reason why I'll never fly again without a lot of coaxing by someone.
Bottled up with so many people like that and no place to go would drive me nuts.

My wife was wanting to fly back to WV and I told her to add up the time and see. I can be there and have control of my self in almost the same time. Not worth the hassle to me. I pay that kind of money and then they make me take my shoes off first thing before I can even get on board? Just who is the customer here?

I was listening to talk show host Neal Boortz on the radio yesterday talking about how when he was on a flight he had his seat slightly reclined and someone reached around his seat and pushed the button and pushed his seat up.

No thanks I'll drive.

Quite true!

However it does obligate them to be polite.

Being polite does not require gratitude, merely good upbringing.

Charles - I remember when this e-mail first came out, and though I fly almost weekly, I got the dark humor. I guess I was just commenting on the fact that, again, flying almost weekly, I get exposed to so many rude and inconsiderate people, and was just wondering what happened to our society. Sorry for hijacking your post - that was rude and inconsiderate of me!

I was raised, as was every other Texas and Southern boy and girl, of my generation, to say please and thank you. I live in an area that is 95% Mexican and they still raise their kids to say "Por favor" and "gracias". It is a very polite place to live with folks holding the door for others and being gracious and kind in general.

I believe you guys when you say it ain't so where you live. However, manners is one aspect of Border life that is positive.

Like charles, I could hardly belive anyone would take that joke serious. I thought it funny as hell! ITS A JOKE GUYS! My mother and edith bunker, I could see takeing it serious!
Now as far as flying goes, I love to fly but dont. A money thing. I still own a old citaberia that needs to be put together. I havent been a active pilot in close to 30 years. I will be the 1st to admit its a exspendsive ego trip.
There are times in life that its nessasary to fly commercial. When a family member dies on the opposite coast etc. When I was single and had a short vacation it was cheaper and more practable to fly home back east. Married and buying two tickets its hard to justify! Unless you know people you also have to rent a car when you get there. Motels alone keep me close to home! My biggest gripe about flying is you can sit with a hundred people on a hundred flights and almost never, if you inquire, do two people pay the same price!! Get your ticket early on a deal for $200, and the person next to you might have paid $2,000! Across the aisle someone may tell you they are flying for free as hubby is a baggage handler for the airline. Many years ago the airlines were a lot like vegas when people actualy dressed up to go in a casino or on a flight. Nowdays we have no class at all! Of course, you would have to be close to 70 to agree with me.

I am 67 and remember when men wore suits, ties and hats, and women wore hats and gloves to take a flight. My first flight was on a Braniff Conviar 440. That should put some date to this post.

Shoot, I can remember when folks dressed up to go to the movies on Saturday night. Kids might wear jeans to the afternoon show, but not at night.

Charles, I honestly don't want to drag this down to a culture/geographical discussion, but it is my opinion that class and manners are not regionally isolated to the Southern Border areas. I recently crossed the country, up north on Rt 2, from the UP to Washington and you could not have found a more delightful bunch of humans. If one went into a Ma and Pa joint in on of those little towns that spring up around grain elevators, you'll find everyone sitting together with all the tables pushed together and like as not when you come in, be asked to "want to join us, bud?"....(I also came across the southern USA from AZ thru TX, and found equally delightful people, as well :!: )... But, we do agree on this, the younger generation is sadly lacking in education and manners.
