For you big bore, recoil junkies, and military collectors

Post by jdad »

I was over at the "dog's" house yesterday, to drop off some consignments and saw this "beast". Read the description before looking at any of the photos. It's a whole lot more impressive up close.

I saw one earlier this year at the Dallas Market Hall show. I had a serious case of the drools...

That is amazing! Those Mauser brothers sure knew how to make a rifle. I want to see a picture of the cartridge it shoots! -Tutt

I like the MG 08/15 bipod.

I sold mine a few years back ( the rifle not the machine gun ). The projectiles would easily punch through standard WW1 tank armour. I never heard of anyone commenting it being used as a long range sniper cartridge like me do today.

It was easier to flip a standard 8mm rifle projectile 180 degrees with base forward and point back into the case to make a poor man's shaped charge ( this worked from 25-75yards )

I never saw a Mauser AT in real life. It always was considered a real unusual collector's item.

In the 1950's, I remember seeing ads in The American Rifleman & other firearms magazines for the Boys Anti-tank (.55 cal.??) & the Lathi Anti-tank (20mm) Rifles.

After being sold off as surplus, most of the Boys were later rebarreled to .50 BMG. @ the club I formerly belonged to, one of the WW II vets had a Boys converted to .50 BMG & it always drew a crowd.

IIRC, there was limited use of the Boys by the USMC in the very early Pacific campaigns.

Here's a pic of a cartridge from my collection. Its the one in the middle. A 50 BMG is on the left and a 30-06 is the puny one on the right. Second pic is the headstamp showing it was made in August 1918. I have been looking for that gun just so I can shoot this one cartridge. :D ----------Sixgun

I understand that the stock design was poor, and the recoil was so fierce that the average landser could only tolerate about ten shots before he fliched so bad he was useless. Not much point in using it as a sniper rifle. Later anti-tank rifles usually had recoil reduction systems besides a muzzle brake, to help the poor gunner tolerate it.
