So what are you doing for the Labor Day Weekend?

Post by stew71 »

We're heading to the coast this afternoon with friends for camping and abalone diving near Dillon Beach. It's a small beach town with some great camping in the sand dunes an hour north of San Francisco right at the entrance to Tomales Bay. The ab diving will take place at our honey hole cove about an hour north near Ft. Ross State Park. Hopefully, the surf and tides will be on our side this weekend. While some of us are stalking the elusive ab, the women-folk and kids will be digging in the mud flats for horseneck and steamer clams and we'll also have a few crab pots tied to the pier in the hopes of trapping some nice dungeness crab.

Of course, there will be plenty of home-made beer, wine, and hooch to make sure everyone stays warm around the campfire!!

Have a great weekend and do NOT labor too much.

My wife and I and the two dogs will be headed up to Estes Park next to the Rocky Mountain national park to spend the weekend in her family's log cabin which was built in 1922. Relaxing, listening to the elk bugle and playing bridge. Monday we turn the water off and lock it up for the winter.

The Daughter just walked in the door coming from her College to spend the holiday with us! :) Getting ready to go to our local High School Football game.Course now she will be wearing "her College sweatshirt". Meanwhile our mini Schnauzer is going nuts running around the house with its fake mouse and kitty showing off for the Daughter! When ever she is home its a good time! :)

I will continue to be stressed!

Bought a pair of Fuzzy Farant grips for $150
Post Office lost them!
Bought a revolver to put them on $545!
So I spent $700 and have nothing to show for it so far (revolver in transit)!

Now I will have a revolver in a caliber I wasn't planning on getting and will
have to find a pair of grips I like (My 21-4 still needs proper grips too).
I only want proper fitting custom wood grips on anything less than 44 Mag.

So every time I think about this I will try to not let my blood boil.

I plan to work on work and projects this weekend and spend some time with family.

I hope y'all have a better weekend than I do!

Taking the girls camping out at the farm. Not really "roughing it", at least in my book. But we have a lake to fish, plenty of room to shoot, and the girls are just a three minute drive from an indoor bathroom and running water. :D

Unfortunately, lying in bed or on the recliner like I am now. I have had a bad back most of my adult life due to an automobile accident 26 years ago. Being tagged 5 years ago by a taxi while walking in a cross-walk in Vegas didn't help much either. However, in the last couple weeks I started getting shooting pain down my right leg - from the buttock through the thigh and calf and into the ankle. My foot feels numb all the time. It goes from a constant dull "toothache" type to extremely intense. Got so bad last week that I had to sit down to give a presentation to one of my customers.

Got into the doctor's this week, and then into a orthopedic specialist. The x-rays show compression between my L5 and S1, as well as some orthoarthritis. Definintely pinching my sciatic nerve. I'm on 3 prescriptions now, and have been ordered to bed rest - for two weeks. That's not going to happen with work, but I did sit in the recliner all day today alternating between ice-packs and the heating pad, and will keep it up through the weekend. Fortunately I can get some work done with the laptop and phone, even stretched out on the recliner. This is no fun though fellas...

YK, You are in my prayers brother!!

I will be dove hunting on Saturday and Monday evening. During the days, I will visit the Mule and begin to tear out my diesel engine from my sailboat. Its on the hard right now, the diesel has seized and its terminal. I am going to shift to an electric motor with battery bank. It will be recharged while under sail or through solar panel. Huge undertaking but this will make me environmentally clean and green and I will have reliable power when needed. After that, finish ripping out a SS storage tank to make more dry storage and pull the mast to redo the wiring harness, change out lights and touch up the varnish. By the time the north winds blow, I will have the boat in ship shape and the heater will set a warm glow in the cabin, by the bay.

Our family has gathered at the farm/ranch for the last 30 years or so. Most of us kids have to swap Christmases and Thanksgivings with inlaws. Nobody competes for Labor Day.

This one is bitter-sweet. We lost my "brother-by-choice" not too long after this last year. His family is "our family" (I'm Uncle Jeff and his children call my dad grandpa).

Yesterday his first grandson was born.

The wife's painting the front porch (I don't do that kind of thing) and I've been out shooting. Going to a friends house for a BBQ tomorrow.

In case anybody's interested, I just let the wife keep saying that this or that needs to be done, don't take any action, and finally, she'll do it herself. I always reward her. Just look at this weekend. She paints today and tomorrow I take her to our friends for a BBQ. Doesn't get any better than that!! :)

My 84-yr-old mother has a stenosis at L4, and her symptoms were identical to yours, Jay, with the exception of no numbness. She ended up going to a "pain management specialist" who gave her a targeted steroid injection at the site, using a fluoroscope to hit the correct spot. It must have been an x-ring shot, because within 30 minutes Mom had only 20% of the pain, and within 48 hrs she was largely pain-free. That was almost three months ago, and she's still doing fine. The Dr. told her to wait until she can't stand it again before the next injection, because they can oly administer three a year, maybe four in rare special cases. He told her that at her age, he's not recommending surgery because she isn't presenting with numbness yet. If she develops numbness, then it's scalpel time.

Best wishes, and prayers . . .

As for my weekend:

Quotations
Reports
Reprogramed a client's PLC controller
My wife, daughter, one son, and I took my 84-yr-old mother out for dinner Saturday evening to celebrate her birthday (9-11-25).
Washed the lee side of the house with TSP, an annual task
Scraped and painted a couple peeling problem area spots on the siding elsewhere on the house
Replaced the front and rear rotors and pads on my 112,000 mile 2000 Subaru Outback wagon
Changed the oil and filter in my daughter's 2001 Solara since she was home from college this weekend
Changed the wiper blades on my one son's 2002 Camry
Went to a 'mountain pie" cookout Sunday night
Stripped a Marlin 60 stock
Bought a 9422M, replaced the rear sight, and sighted it in
Snapped a photo of the 9422M to post here in a different thread
Killed a colony of ground bees
Mowed the lawn
Hung some matted and framed photos from our vacation in Europe in Jul and Aug.
Wasted two hours at a small firehall funshow, but found a needed spring
Installed said spring in the bolt stop in a friend's Remington 600 rifle
Cooked french toast for my wife, daughter, and one son Monday AM
Assisted ambulance crew with elderly neighbor who fell and couldn't get up
Cooked dinner for said elderly neighbor woman, ate with her to make sure she was OK
Filed quotations at the office
Generated invoices for work done for clients this past week
Filled my daughter's Solara fuel tank before she left for college Monday afternoon
Watched a couple episodes of "Chopped" on the Food Network
Finished reading "Dark Horse", the new Walt Longmire crime mystery by Craig Johnson
Got a callout at 00:20 this morning from a another client who's machine wouldn't start up. The PLC's memory battery went dead over the weekend and it lost programming. Took five mins to replace the battery and about 10 mins to dump the program, then another 10 mins to put things through their paces to make sure everything ran OK; left the client a note saying that a $125 scheduled memory battery replacement that I've been remining him monthly since January could have averted a $650 callout and reprogram . . .

Just a typical long weekend for Noah . . .

Guess I stumbled onto this one a tad late. We did go up to the "Money Pit", er our Sierra cabin to do some maintenance and spend some kick back time. The river is at it's late summer low stage, but still makes enough noise to lull us to sleep. On a sad note, one of our friend's cabin burned to the ground on 2 Sep. They had just spent $52K on a new bridge, as well as new decking, a metal roof, and interior upgrades. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but suspected cause are rags left over from applying deck sealer being left in a shed by a worker. Needless to say, there were tears flowing heavily, as this loss is irreplacable. Several decades of family labors and love gone in an instant. Fortunately, they were heavily insured, but it is still up in the air if the "Forest Circus" will "allow" them to rebuild. The fire did not "run away" and was stopped at less than half an acre by the FD that had to come all the way up the hill from a place 22 miles away. :(

Stew, Dillon has long history for us, too. From the window, we can look down on Lawson's store. If you are willing to walk a bit, there is good Ab diving a mile north where Stemple Creek enters the ocean. Superb poke poling there at low tide, too. I have dived at Ft Ross many times. We go down to the end of the parking lot and pass through the gate to park on adjacent property. Plenty rough there on occasion, but some nice "hub caps" have been plucked from the cove below where we park. :)

Mike...we had a great time at Lawson's this weekend. Last year, during a major negative tide, we took the Zodiac across the bay, and hiked over the peninsula to a cove on the ocean side. We were able to drop our gear and rock pick some of those "hub caps" without ever donning that darn weight belt!! But this year, after getting some hot tips from a local game warden, we found that the cove just north of Ft Ross can be a real nice producer. A short hike to the cliffs then down a trail to the beach. We found a nice reef/rock pile about 200 yards offshore 10' down. We cleaned up, limiting out on Sat & Sun with several over 9" across on Sunday. Found 'em under an overhang just waiting to be picked.

I'll have to remember to post the pics this week.
