New Ruger 96/22m 22 mag

Post by kemosabi45 »

Here is my brand new lever gun. The wood has some nice grain and color to it. The lever is stiff, trigger heavy buy no creep just crisp and clean. I have been wanting a 22 mag lever rifle for a while.. I am not sure what and when i will get time to use it for hunting but some paper punching is in the near future. My old eyes need some help so I plan on installing a scope probably a 2x7x32 to keep it light. What scope do you all use on your 22mag rifle? If you have one of these which brand of ammo works best? I know someone is think a smart answer like The ammo that goes bang when you pull the triger!!! I have a Taurus 4" Blue 8 shot 22 mag revolver that is a nice companion to this but I also could use the 9 1/2" Ruger Single 6 or the lite and easy to shoot Heritage Birdshead 22 mag.

You can lighten the trigger pull up by replacing the trigger return spring with a lighter one. It's the little coil spring right behind the trigger that pushes it forward.

I've got a 4x Bushnell on mine now, but I've played around with several others. I may put a Williams FP peep on it eventually.

So far Winchester 'grey box' works as well as the Hornady stuff. I just got some cheapo 'white' box stuff I'll try sometime. Will post results at that point.

I really like the "96's" - have a .44 Mag, .22 Mag, and .22 LR 8) 8) 8)

It looks like Ruger discontinued the 96 series, there is some in stock at this web site.

I would like to get a 96/44 some day. I know a neighbor who has one as new, he has never fired it. At this time he will not sell it to me but he did sell me his 99/44 and I love it.

This is my Ruger 96 in 44 MAG. Scope is 2.5X TASCO shotgun scope from 1980's (made in Japan).

My 22 MAG is a bolt-action by Marlin. I mounted a 3X-9X Simmons scope bought on eBay for about $60.

- Winchester ammo is most accurate.

- Worst accuracy is 32 gr ammo offered by Remington.

Thanks for info and pics guys. I'm drooling on the keyboard for one of the 44's. I have to save and build the gun budget back up then may they will have a shipment of new 96/44's out. I talk to a distributor and he said that he has some on back order. I'm not holding my breath.

Since they have a faster (1:20) twist than the Marlins, I want to see sometime if mine will shoot the heavier bullets more accurately, but so far I've been so happy with the 240 grainers that I've not bothered. On the 240's, the Ruger may have a slight edge, but for me to get the 'most' out of any of them these days, my old eyes really need a fairly high-magnification scope, and neither little carbine is 'right' with a big old tube on it. Still fun to speculate. Lots of folks say the Marlins do fine up to 300's, but some don't - my suspicion is it depends as much on how overbore it is as it does the bullet weight, within reason.

Congratulations on the 96/22M, Kemosabi! The wood on that is exceptionally figured for a Ruger.

I have the 96 in 44 and 22LR and would like to find one in 22M. My only 22M rifle is a Marlin 57M which I purchased just last month and have been having a lot of fun with.
