OT - Army Air Corp in Yosemite (ca. 1932) Aircraft ID Pls
Saw jnyork's neat post of old aircraft and it reminded me that I had this copy sitting on the desk. Older buddy knows I'm interested in aircraft and brought over an old print for me to have a gander at. I thought I had pretty much seen everything connected with Yosemite but I never saw this photo before. Photo only has "Army Air Corp July 1932" penciled on the back of it and my buddy (80+ yrs) doesn't remember when or where he came across it. Any guesses as to aircraft type? Appears to have been taken from another aircraft and appears they are flying from Half Dome towards Yosemite Falls. Thanks!

I believe that's a Martin MB1
I have a photo at home of a group of those. I'll try to find it.
I also have a fascination with vintage aircraft!

But the MB1 doesn't have a forward wing... like it sure looks like the OP has...

Maybe MB 2? The black rectangles behind each engine sort of threw me. Thought maybe the photo was censored and the Army didin't want us to see something. Now I think they're radiators. The MB 1 had the radiators in front of the engine.2ndovc wrote:I believe that's a Martin MB1

Also, like OI, I thought the aircraft might have some kind of canard (I know, we're talking circa 1920-1932) but now I'm thinking there is an aircraft in front of this one (i.e., the aircraft doing the picture taking is third in line).

I think there's another plane in front and below it.
Not sure where I got the phot I have but I remeber that those pilots must have been some
tough hombres to fly those things. Open cockpits and all.
Sure was a different generation!

I'm going to say a version of the Wright Military Flyer. Has a foward "horizontal stabilizer" and side by side seating. But over Yosemite, I wonder where it launched from. Very possibly a promotional photo.

Curtis B-2 Condor Note the second horizontal stabilizer on the tail.. This blends in with the wing of the forward plane tricking the eye various ways.. Note also the better view of the guy (engineer maybe) sitting in the engine gondola..

That thing is making me crazy. I've looked through my entire unabridged Janes Encyclopedia of Aviation. No go. It is not a Martin.

Yup, gotta go with the Curtiss B2 Condor
I'll have to dig around in my stash of old a/c pics to see if I have any of the Condor. I think I've got one of a Curtiss P6E though...

I agree with BuffBoy, I think Ben nailed it. Curtis Condor B2. Entered service 1927~1928 so that makes more sense if photo truly is from 1932. Looks to me like both gondolas are occupied in the Yosemite photo.
