I have not seen a better deal than that. The 250 throws a 100 gr bullet at 2700 to 2800 fps.

The .250-3000 is one of the sweetest rounds around, the gun it is in is a classic, I would not do $750.00 for it but others would.
Try to get him to come down on the price, if he is trying to sell it locally, I would be willing to bet he is not getting takers.

I just fond this after my first post.....

In 1913, Savage rocked the shooting world with the introduction of the first commercial sporting cartridge to attain 3,000 fps -- again one of Newton's creations, the famous .250-3000. Inherently accurate, light of recoil, and perfectly matched to varmints and medium-sized game, the .250-3000 in the Model 99 sold like hot cakes -- and still does, when you can find one!

Still wonder if its worth the 750?

Check serial number range with reference (such as Murray's book on the 99) regarding whether rifle was factory drilled for mounts. Were after market sling swivels added?Any alteration detracts from value, though not necessarily f you want rifle purely as a shooter.Hopefully no recoil pad was added. Certainly not needed.

On the $750, I looked for 15 years, saw three: $600 - not in the condition you saw, $750 - not good enough for me and a perfect one for which I traded a Kimber 308 - happily.

I might have some 250 Savage/250-3000 (same thing) reloading stuff I will never use.
If you get the rifle I will dig thru my stuff and see what I have.

The two 99 250s I reloaded for both would shoot inch or less groups.

Even with the swivels , not a bad deal, though from a collectors point of view they wreck the rifle (collector's opinion, not mine! :) . I think I'd buy it, put a nice Leupold 3x scope on it ,or if your eyes are young enough a vintage receiver sight, and go deer hunting! :)

This thread pretty much says it all about the .250 Savage and the .250 - 3000 Savage. The link to a Rifles Magazine article in one of my posts is very good. You can print it or save it to your hard drive or both.

There are two distinctly different post war Savage 99 250s. The ones made until 1960 have a lever safety and checkered pistol grip stocks. Whether they be 99EG or F they will have a 1 in 14" twist which will not usually stabalize the heavier 25 cal bullets very well. The later ones made in the 1970s with the straight grip, uncheckered stocks and tang safeties are not finished as well on the outside, but have a 1 in 10" twist and do stabalize the heavier bullets well.

Well now, that is not true. I have one made in 54 and shoots 100s fine, inch or less at 100. I believe it is the faster twist.

I have a TD 99 in 250-3000 and like it a lot. Mine is tight, accurate, and handy.
