Levergun modification

Post by Grizz »

I've been thinking again. Yeah I know.

Thinking about having an octagonal barrel installed on my Marlin GS.

It would be 16.125" with a custom barrel band to replace the endcap/hanger configuration. I'd mark the barrel 45/70. I'd have the front sight dovetailed in the barrel directly. No rear sight dovetail. Maybe extend the mag to -1/8" from the muzzle, but that would be cosmetic.

Essentially I would be building a shortened, stainless LTD III.

Who would be a good gunsmith for this project? Experience, names and numbers please.

Regards, Grizz

Sounds cool. I love my LTDIII. It's been a constant companion since I got it.

The Smith that rebarreled my Martini cadet rifle would most likely do that.

I can pm his Name and Number if ya like.

I agree with Jeeps.

A 16" octagon stainless 45-70 ..... :D :D :D :D :D Joey likie.

I've never had a rifle rebarreled so I can't suggest a gunsmith.

Warn us though before you post pictures. Jeeps is likely to soil more than his good shirt when he sees the pics!

I had two savage 99's rebarreled by mazy's in AZ. one from 308
to 358win and the other 308 to 7mm-08 ..

both are great ... a little costly .. but I'm satisfied ....

you might check into wild west guns .. they do a lot of marlin stuff ...

I would also talk to Gary Reeder

at Reedercustomguns.com

good luck .. and post pic's when you get it back ...

If your gonna go with a 16" barrel in a 45/70 IMO the extra weight of the octogon barrel would be the best way to preserve balance and control recoil not to mention the coolness factor. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks for the links Talon, I'll check out the AZ guy.

Guys, I haven't committed to doing this. Yet. I'm just tire kicking the idea around right now. I can save a bunch by dovetailing the barrel for the front sight. That's easy enough to do if the barrel is indexed properly.

Has anyone seen barrel bands for octagonal barrels? Maybe I was dreaming. I don't much care for the under-barrel dovetails.

For sure if I get this done there'll be pictures galore.
