.30-30 bullets at .30-06 velocities?

Post by Slick13 »

Any idea what a Speer 150 gr. Hot Core .30-30 bullet would do on varmit size animals when pushed to a muzzle velocity between 2700 and 2800 fps? Spring is coming and all sorts of unwanted animals are showing up around the house. .30-06 is the only scoped rifle around, and I'm thinking of loading .30-30 bullets in the .30-06 in hopes that they will be a bit more explosive on smaller animals than a .30-06 bullet would be.

Thanks,

~Michael

I'd think they'd just blow through and do about the same damage as a normal spire point. On a larger game animal, they'd probably turn inside out at anything closer than 200 yards.

I would recommend the Speer 110 grain hollowpoints - they will blow up for sure!

:D I don't know about the Speer Hot Cor's, however I know that 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips @ 3200+ fps will explode any varmint you decide to level the sights on...... Makes a bloody mess of 'em. Hope this helps, Thanks, Tom

While I haven't ever used them in my .30 caliber rifle, I would agree the lighter weight bullets would provide the explosive results you want for hunting varmints. Those 150s are designed for deer-sized game & are probably constructed to not come apart so easily when they hit the target medium the way the lighter ones are. Just my 2 cents, jd45

I second the use of those Speer 110 HPs. Those things KILL! Spin a 'yote sideways at 200 yds. :D

I used to shoot the little Speer round-nosed soft points in my .30-30. They were going somewhat faster than the .30 carbine they were designed for could do. I remember hitting a jack rabbit and it literally splattered meat everywhere, strings hanging from the mesquite. (Sorry for the gore, Al) ;-)

They should have fairly violent expansion. Probably not as much as the lighter 30cal ( I can vouch for the 130gr Speer HP's--friend had feral dogs killing his calves--caught them doing it one day, they didn't do it again!!). Entrance hole, no exit. The 150's might exit. The 130's will work well if you are worried about whats in the background. 110's should also 1 hole in, none out. I liked the 130's when I used my 06 for PD hunting as I sometimes got a 400yd + shot and figured the heavier bullet would work well farther out. It did.

I am using the Speer 110 HP's at this moment (nearly gone now). I was using them in my 30/30 and finishing them off in the 308.
It is possible with them on a length wise shot for the bullet to not leave the fox, I remember one from my good 94 years ago and I could feel bits of bullet under the skin at the far end of him.
They drop quick though with range, bit pistol bullet shape!

Youve almost got the right idea, if you are not shooting long range you
use the 85 - 100 grain pistol bullets instead of the 30/30 bullets.

You can get em up way past 3000 fps without even trying hard in a 30-06
