1886 winchester[1 of 500 repro]

Post by HOSS »

Anyone know if the newer 1886 Winchesters will
lever up a 500 grain bullet?or does it just handle the
405s.it;s a 1 in 18 twist also.
THANKS HOSS

Hoss,

The RCBS 500 grain flat nose GC bullet should work because the amount of the bullet that extends beyond the crimp groove appears to be about the same as their 405 grain.

If you reload, & haven't got one yet, get yourself a Lee Factory Crimp Die. It'll enable you to crimp wherever you need to, to get a good COAL for reliable feeding, instead of being restricted to crimping in the crimp-groove. Hope this helps, LOVE THOSE '86's jd45

And get a slip-on recoil pad, while you're at it.

The issue here is that late model Browning and Winchester 1886's have virtually no throat and with most bullets you will be unable to fully utilise the longer COAL (up to 2.88"). The way around this if you cast is to obtain a mould in a bore riding (2 diameter) design. A properly optimised design would provide greater powder capacity compared to say RCBS 500 FN. An alternative would be to throat the chamber longer but the downside is that accuracy may suffer with shorter bullets.

I have worked up to 550grs in the B-86 without issue. I am restricted to a loaded length of about 2.500" due to the short throat in the barrel. I am unsure if the newer Win. has the same condition. As mentioned, the Lee FCD is a great asset.

Ditto on the Lee factory crimp die. I use the Lyman 462540 mold, the nose will fit in the bore and it can be crimped to the desired lenght.

Is a real thumper at anything over 1500/1600 fps.

Hoss;
My 1886 .45-90 repro is a Davidsons 1 of 500 and I have fired 45-90 Sharps 500 grain loads in it. They had to be hand inserted into the chamber as the their COL kept them passing through the loading gate. They will not eject if not fired however and must be carefully hand removed if not fired.
I do have both North Fork and Kodiak 450 grain bullets with a crimping groove far enough forward that the COL is OK.

I was assuming we were discussing a .45-70 chambered rifle. Yes? 1886.
