Which surplus powders?

Post by homefront »

Like many people, I'm going to place a bulk order for powder from Pat's Reloading http://www.patsreloading.com/patsrel/prices.htm.
For this order, I'd like to limit myself to 3 powders, to be used in the following calibers: 7.62 x 39, .30-30, .38-55, .38/.357, .41 mag, .44 mag. Among the powders I'm considering are wc820, wc 860, and Salut (Russian Unique).
Anybody have experience with this stuff? Alternatives?

Pat is swamped with orders. My order for WC820 has been waiting since November.

But, that's not what you asked! Sorry

I'm glad you mentioned it. I heard he was backed up about 4-6 weeks.
Still, I haven't found his selection or pricing elsewhere.

Selection & pricing mean nothing if they don't have any stock...

If it's true, you're correct.

I have been using WC820(n) for the 357 and 44Mag with good results. My batch of surplus WC820(n) is the equiv to AA#9. Junior has some good info on the WC820 on his site. He has the same lot I have.

Hi

I don't believe you would be happy with the wc860 in any of the cartridges you list.

It is slower than 4831.

I think I would double up on the 820 , it works well for medium to full snort loads in the magnum handgun cartridges.

Also does well for reduced cast loads in the 30-30, might work the same in the 7.62x39 and 38-55.

The wc 297 sounds interesting, but no experience with it.

If you could find some wc846 , it would work well in the 30-30, usually loads the same as BL-C2.

good shooting

Two other powder suppliers, FYI -
http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html (Currently has powder similar to IMR4198, 8lbs @$12.50 lb)
http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/ (8 days behind, right now)
