Marlin Lever age

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Didnt get the serial# but it is a 20" half tube magazine, has round lever and Ballard rifling, can I assume it was made in the 50's or even 40's
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Before 56 anyway. I believe 56 was the first year for Microgroove.

336 SC (sporting carbine) 2/3 mag. My favorite Marlin. :D

IIRC they were made with wavy top on the Receiver (not D&T Ballard rifled ) from 49- 53
53-54 No wavey lines on receiver ( ballard rifled,not D&T )

They were D&T for receiver sight but not for scope at the factory.

Sorry, hands are ahead of my brain. Its a 336 in 30/30. Stock finish is worn and blueing is fading. But is a very smoooth and tight rifle with honest wear and use. No scratches or gouges in either metal or wood. Also would i t be sacrilige to cut barrel to 16" ? thanks todd

Dont know about sacralidge, but I wouldn't cut it. If its not drilled & tapped it's worth a bit to some guys. I'd find a newer one to chop myself.

Ballard rifled should be 1955 or earlier, and cutting it to 16" would be a shame. Follow Ken's advice and buy a newer one to chop off.
