OT Remington SPR18

Post by TedH »

Stopped in the local gun store today to see what was new. They had a Remington SPR18 on the counter. I picked it up for a look-see and couldn't believe my eyes. It was the absolute worst of everything. The wood was horrible. The checkering was shallow pressed. Wood to metal fit had gaping holes. The rear sight was mounted so far off center I couldn't comfortably create a sight picture at all. I was in a state of disbelief that Remington would ever put their name on something of that poor quality. I know it's not a "real" Remington, but I can't believe they would want to be associated with such poor workmanship.

Yeah but for $275 wholesale they aren't that bad. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Just my $0.02, but buying one is the same as flushing $275 down a toilet - that's where stuff like that belongs, anyway !

When the puchase price is added to by taxes, paperwork, and upgrading costs to make a decent silk purse out of one - a buyer better be prepared to hand it down to their heirs as an heirloom, since there's virtually a zero resale market for used Remmy/Baikals.

Unless, of course, that "someone" is prepared to give it away at a major $$$ loss.

Hmmm, that is interesting. The double rifle in 30-06 I have from them actually has nice fit and finish and shoots very well. I wonder if they have had different quality controls during the production.

Don't know about that Mike, but I bet your double wasn't a $300 gun though. Maybe they know they would need to do better to sell the doubles for several hundred dollars more. I wouldn't have given $50 for the one saw.

Mike: Any chance of sharing photos of your double rifle?
I have a Remington Spartan 12-gauge double, and am happy with it for the money. It is strong and reasonably light and balanced. I hunted pheasants, ducks and sharptails with it in the Sand Hills of central Nebraska and was very pleased with the gun and how it carried mile after mile. Yes it could be livelier and with a crisper stock and checkering. But I think it is more gun that what I would have paid for a plainer and possibly heavier old Stevens double. Now that I have a little Franchi 28-gauge auto in the bullpen, however, I might be leaving the Spartan in the rack for upland birds ...

For the CAS shooter in the "Classic Cowboy category the mule-eared double or the lever-action Win 1887 is required. CC is not really a novice CAS category, so often the entrant is looking to pick up his 2nd, or even 3rd SG. Cost is a factor, and the Baikal (Remington import) @ ¾ the cost of the TTN, less than ½ of the CZs holds a certain attraction. Most fellars have probably seen an example, and at the price will forego pretty wood and deep finishes for sturdy & reliable in a comoetition gun that's gonna be thrown/tossed/knocked about on loading/unloaading tables & props. "New" get knocked off competition guns pretty quickly, so a less than stellar finish ain't a big deal.
A Hammer double w/coach gun length barrels won't see any long lines at the checkout register, so the guy looking for just that type ain't goona be as picky as say... the guy ogling a Purdy double to impress his friends in the dove fields come fall.
Some, and this might include me, would like their SG to say "Rmington" on the barrel vs. made in Cina or Spain, or wherever.
And if a little cost to modify, strengthen & improve reliabllity were a concern, vs. keepin' ones comp guns pristine and in factory-like order I don't believe many folks would be competing in CAS.
The only gun I shoot in "box-stock" form, is my Uberti 1873 rifle. The fact is, even it was slicked up & tuned by the factory rep when it was returned to EMF for an improperly fit extractor.
Let's just say that if the Remington SPR18 had fit & finish comparable to the CZ guns, so would its' price.

What really gets me in a knot, is Remington closing H&R or NEF or whatever they were called. The handi-rifle is not the nicest gun. The few I have had experiences with were solid and accurate American-made guns. Its one thing to bring in nice foreign items, but to bring in garbage...Its a shame what is happening. I will not support Remington or any other company owned by their parent company.

Did they actually shut them down or are they just under going a re-organization along with Marlin?
