24" barrel 336 Marlin?

Post by gundownunder »

Usedguns has a pair of Marlin 24" barrelled, half magazine 336 30-30s for sale.
One is a 336S the other a 336A. The serial numbers listed on the site dont match the marlin manufacture database.
Anyone know when Marlin made the 336 in this configuration and what the difference is between the A and S models.

gundownunder , I have a Marlin 336A with ballard rifling so it was made before 53 or thereabouts. They also made them up until about 65 IIRC. My dad gave me a very slightly used one with MG rifling in about 63.
I will look in Col Brophies book when I get a few minutes and expound with more accurate info. Chuck :D

All I know, is that I own a 336-A, half mag 24 incher, #23036XXX . It looks almost as good as when new, is a beautiful piece I got for 125.00 at a gun store in Oregon in about 1986. A friend who also had one of these told me at the time that they made them in 1951, 2, and 3 as I recall. I far prefer mine to a carbine length.
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.

336A and 336A Deluxe made from 48 to 62
336A second variation made from 73 to 80
There is a picture of a third variation in Brophies book but no dates. I believe it just had sling swivels added to the second variation.

In 57 ???they came out with a MonteCarlo stock on the A (not to my liking)
Funny how tastes change, when I was a kid I thought the MC stock was cool. I also liked the Weatherby rifles. Today I think Weatherbys are the hight of gaudy and bordering on downright ugly!! :o

The 24" round barrel 336 is hard to come by. I have seen only 1 and my brother-in-law will not part with it (nor will he use the dat-gum thing) His was produced in the second run (microgroove) as Chuck points out in the above post. I have wanted a 24"er for some time and was glad to see the cowboy model come out with the even-better 24" octagon barrel. I have 2 now, both Cowboys. I'd snag that gun if you are able and it is in acceptable condition.

Mine was made in 1977 and is a very good shooter with cast RCBS 180 FN at close to 2000 fps. It will be the last of my .30-30s to go!
