OT: Source for reduced .223 loads?

Post by Jason_W »

It's hard to find a range around here that extends much past 100 yards, so it seems wasteful to burn all that powder pushing a bullet well over 3k f/s to bust a water jug sitting at 75 yards (yes, I'm that cheap).

Are there any books that publish data for loading a .223 down to a .22 hornet level?

Handi rifle

I don't have to worry about a low pressure load failing to cycle a semi-auto

I did it years ago, can't recall the specific details other than using Unique powder and getting the data from a cast bullet manual with a bullet of similar weight. I shot them in a AR-15 and had to manually cycle the action. I do recall getting a quiet report and knocking over tin cans without changing the sights at close range.

Jason,
I just bought a Lee Bator .22 mould from Midsouth for working up some cast bullet loads in my .223. There is a whole thread on just that over on castboolit.com Buying cast bullets isn't all that cheap when you compare the prices to jacketed. I bought 250 bulk Remington bullets for $12 and there are those out there that would sell you 100 cast for $18. I fail to see the economy in that.
The Bator mould is a special order that Midsouth does with Lee and is a regular item when they have them in stock. According to those in the know on castboolit it is one of the better ,22 moulds out there.
