416 Barnes
I am curious is anyone shooting the 416 Barnes and experences with it?
I am thinking of having a 1895 Marlin converted and possibly going with a 24" to 26" barrel.
Thanks
David

Re: 416 Barnes
Had one, on a Marlin. Finally sold it. It wont do anything a 45-70 wont do better.
Re: 416 Barnes
I have some spare 1886 TD parts and was considering the .416 Barnes on an original nickel steel barrel, but have since decided to go .40-82 WCF instead.

Re: 416 Barnes
First time I think I ever heard of this round was when I looked at Cosby's web site and they had a lever action there that was supposed to be a 416 Barnes .
I'd be up for one !
But I want a 50 AK and 475 GNR first !

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Thought process for the .416 Barnes was that it would provide flatter trajectory and better penetration at longer range than the parent 45-70. I am wanting to go with a longer 24"/26" octagon barrel w/full lenght mag tube.
I recently got my .416 Barnes chamber reamer from PTG and will start on this project after I get a set of dies made up.

Re: 416 Barnes
Only downfall I can see is that there are very few cast bullets designed properly for what the case and OAL requires. Even far fewer choices in jacketed bullets. Most don't have the parallel section going far enough forward on the bullet so the case mouth could grip or be crimped into it. Good luck though. I always though of the same thing based on the .410-.411 bullets. At least you could then use pistol bullets.
Re: 416 Barnes
One of the writers for the "American Rifleman" did a kinda similar thing about 5 years ago .
He took the 450 Marlin and necked it down to 10mm and called it the 400 Marlin .He used it okay for some caribou I think . But Later I think he said he wished he had made it a 410 instead so he could use the 41 MAG bullets if memory serves .
Anyway when there's a will there's a way

Re: 416 Barnes
I've got one on a 1895 Marlin in the works. My gunsmith makes a swagging die to swag down .429 bullets, and says they're having good luck with them. Bullet selection is pretty limited. I think a 45-70 necked to .405 might be a better choice.
Re: 416 Barnes
Yes the bullet selection is pretty limited but there are some good choices.
Both Beartooth and Montanta Bullet Works makes nice cast .416 FN bullets.
Also Hawk Bullets makes a great jacketed FN bullets, not cheap but neither are the cost of a guided hunts.
Anyone know best place to have custom dies made? I have the chamber reamer need to get dies made next before rebarreling.
Thanks
