youtube banning gun channels

Post by mickbr »

An example which really annoyed me- the fella who does Kentucky Range Time( not Kentucky Ballistics), lost his whole channel and 500 vids to various 'strikes' by youtube. And he still cant figure out why. He is one of the more scientific pistol bullet velocity and gel penetration guys out there- standardized format and editing, runs loads though 4 different barrel lengths for everything, post graphs at the end. Not that I mind what gun content is out there, but its funny all the gun 'stunt' type guys out there shooting though cars, body armor, gas cylinders and tannerite and that gets a pass. Meanwhile an educational channel is taken down.
Well, rant over.

It's not just ballistics, shooting and hunting. They are hitting hundreds and perhaps thousands of channels with copyright warnings and, if the reports are true, completely deleting channels with no warning or appeal or recourse.

One very popular music channel has just been restored after its year in y.t. purgatory. Why was it deleted ? Someone challenged the channel videographer's / uploader's intro and outro theme music claiming they were the copyright holder. Y.T. took that side and deleted the channel despite the channel "owner" providing proof that the song/music was his own original composition.

After that high-profile deletion, several popular channel "owners" felt the necessity to hire tech. staff and retain intellectual property specializing attorneys. Rick Beato and "the professor of rock" have commented on this often.

Most recently "retropia", a channel that featured complete seasons of british telly series simply disappeared seemingly overnight. Last year it was "sfinthecity", a similar channel to the one just mentioned. It had obscure & almost forgotten American television series from the '70s & '80s. No, they were not in the public domain but the actual owners did not even possess physical tapes of their own material. Over a decade ago, a lady who was just retired from a well known motion picture studio was given custody of tens of thousands of rolls of video tapes that were destined to be thrown away. She gradually digitized them as a life's work and uploaded onto y.t. The accepted custom was, if the property owners were not willing to offer them for sale on dvds or online streaming then there was no reason to object to "fair use" (free) availability on y.t.

Some folks aren't going to like this but here it goes. YouTube is a private business. Just like newspapers. They can publish whatever they want, as long as it is libelous. And they don't have to publish anything they don't want. All the consumer can do is to decide if they want to pay for what is published, whether it's buying a newspaper or clicking and watching ads or paying not to see ads.

I've never been to Rumble. In fact this is the first I have heard of it. But if someone had the where with all to set up a video streaming service that was just outdoors, I'm pretty sure they could make money at it. And if they did, it would be taking money away from outfits like YouTube. Money talks.
