Well boys, I guess after 300 pages and 14,000 some odd posts, it ended.
I guess it was just too much.....for something or someone. But fear not! We can't be beaten down.
Well during a break in the rain today I cranked up the saw and started bucking up some of that wood on the front lawn. There is quite a lot. That old maple I had taken down last December was huge. The snow is off it now but there still isn't really a hurry. I have to split it all but can't haul it into camp until I can get the truck in anyway. I don't want to have to move it any more times than necessary.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Now, that's really odd but I'm glad it isn't dead.
NM has been bone dry but rain is forecast for tomorrow. I hope we get it.
Over the past almost 30 years we've lived in this house, we have lost over a hundred pinon trees to bark beetles which chew rings around the trunk under the bark which effectively starves the trees. By the time the damage is noticeable (branches turning brown) it is generally too late and the trees die. There are some pesticides that are effective systemically but they must be applied long before damage becomes apparent. When there is sufficient moisture, the trees produce enough sap so the beetles cannot gain entry under the bark but when there are extensive periods of drought the trees cannot protect themselves. Juniper trees are uneffected.
We are in the process of losing all our ash trees to the emerald ash borer. People don't realize the huge impact this is going to have for at least a generation or more. Ash is used for tons of things that other woods don't do that well. From baseball bats, to snowshoes, baskets. Luckily, it makes good firewood too. I cut them as I see them dying, but there will be more than I'll ever need for stove wood, sadly.

I started to get into the original thread a bit late. So, I just sort of gave up. I'll try to keep up with the new one.

John, pinon trees (a Hispanic name with a tilde over the n, pronounced like pinyon) are evergreens that look very similar to pine trees. They bear small nuts that are about 1/4" in diameter and 3/8" long that have a thin shell and are sometimes roasted. They don't bear nuts every year but when they do, pinon pickers park their cars next to the roads and spread blankets under the trees to catch the nuts when the trees are shaken. The nuts are delicious and I frequently pop a small handful into my mouth, shell them with my teeth and enjoy the meat inside.
Welcome jeepnik! It's great to have you at our little fire. Pull up a stump, pour yourself a coffee..... or whatever.

Walt,
I burn my wood at camp in a stove. Specifically a Baby Bear. It's a fantastic stove. We had it in our old camp too and took it with us when we left.

Congratulations Walt it's always a pleasure to hand out cigars on such an occasion and a belated happy Birthday to Kristy
I have nothing to report other than I flushed a Woodcock this morning as I was walking my son's Dog.
I'm going to ask my son if he knows of any Pinyon Pine trees on the estate he is a woodsman so he should know, however our climate up here in the north east is a lot different to New Mexico.

Thanks guys. We spent the day together yesterday. Went over to Bangor and went to Lowes and looked at flooring. Then went to Sam's for a few things. Then we went to dinner at Geagans. It's a brewery and restaurant that has the best hot wings I've ever eaten.
Pretty low key day, but we really spend very few days like that. She is either working or watching grandkids most of the time.
