Projectiles

Post by JimT »

We had rain the other night and the morning was cool so it was time! FIRE UP THE LEAD POT! I ran 2 molds ... the RCBS version of the Keith #454424 and the old Ideal mold #454190. Both great bullets in the .45 Colt.

The Ideal mold ... it was rescued by my Dad back in the 1970's I think it was, and it was old then!

Later that afternoon I made more bullets with the Lyman mold #457191 (300 gr.)

The bullets are seated out so they cannot be accidentally used in a Colt or Colt length cylinder.

Sounds like a good day JimT. What does the 300 grain chrony at with that load of 2400 behind it?

The load was tested at Hodgdon's in their pressure barrel. It averaged 1188 fps at 29,400 CUP.

I need to re-learn how to cast. It has been a while.

I’ll take advantage of the better weather.

I understand that is a bit warm for a Colt, but it sounds pleasant in a Freedom Arms.

The 300 gr. load has the bullet seated out too far to fit a Colt or Colt-size cylinder. It works great in the Ruger Blackhawk and that is what it is intended for. And it's a safe load in the Ruger. I've used it in my Rugers since the early 1980's. That was one reason I had the loads pressure-tested. I wanted loads 30,000 CUP or less.

I have run some similar loads in my Blackhawk. 4 5/8" adjustable sights. Spare 45 acp cylinder. Accuracy is good.
