Lithium Batteries - seeing too many unprovoked fires

Post by AJMD429 »

.
We're used to a huge amount of potential energy being stored in our ammunition, although without it being in a chamber, it generally isn't too dangerous, and even a chambered cartridge pretty much NEVER spontaneously ignites or has a primer detonate. Many of us have seen firearms chambered for years without any going off unless the primer is struck pretty hard.

On the other hand, the increasing number of lithium-battery powered devices has resulted in so many fires from batteries that in some cases have been dropped or damaged, but often had no particular 'incident' that caused the fire.

It's tempting to make some kind of container to keep computers or phones in while not being used, and yet even the many red-dot scopes and other things like thermal scopes or GPS units also have such batteries, although usually smaller than computers.

But ordinary cellphones have a pretty major fire result if they erupt. Hopefully if they were in a big iron cookpot or something perhaps that would be less of a problem than if on a nightstand or desk with a bunch of combustibles.

Kind of thought provoking... :|

My friends son in law is a NYC fireman, he says they have multiple fires from lithium batteries, mostly e bike and scooters for the delivery type guys, they buy the cheap chinese knockoffs and have banks of them in about every apartment complex...they carry a sand filled barrel and tongs on the trucks to try and put them out....says he doesn't know why whole buildings don't burn down because of those batteries....yet....

The battery cars are outlawed to use parking garages in Europe due to the fact you cant put the fire out.

Around here the volunteer fire departments had to get special training, they put a perimeter around the vehicle and let it burn for the most part.

The biggest thing is extreme heat or cold and a damaged battery.

Heck I've got Dewalt batteries that are 11 years old and used daily not an issue.
