The Post "Henery 30-30 Accuracy" Got Me To Thinking

Post by COSteve »

I know that Mossberg stopped making them a few years back but I got a new Mossy 464 30-30 back in 2012 that I added a Skinner Peep sight on to and it's turned out to be a joy to use. It's pretty accurate and with the 150 grn, 2,000 fps plinking handloads I developed for my wife, it's easy to shoot. It's not that difficult to hit bowling pins at 200 yds with so I'd say that is plenty accurate enough for me.

That's a handsome levergun, Steve. I didn't even realize Mossberg had made one.

I had a 1952 Winchester 94 but had to sell it in the early 80's, along with my whole collection, to fund the family when the kids were young. This Mossberg has a similar heft to the Winchester but with a much smoother action and significantly better trigger with none of the floppiness of the Winchester's.

As I bought it new vs my Winchester used, it's accuracy is head and shoulders better than my Winchester was as well in part because it came with great Marbles sights and needed nothing to shoot well if one has the eyes.

As I'm a 'senior' shooter, the Skinner rear sight with a target aperture really helps me as it increases the clarity of the front sight and target through increased Depth of Field so that I can aim much better. That's how I'm able to hit a 2 MOA target bowling pin at 200 yds with it.

Closeup of Skinner Sight which screws right into the rear scope ring screw hole:

Yes, nice looking 30-30 Steve. I remember looking for one back in the day when they were making them and all I could find was the tactical version, which I don't like. So today I searched around and was surprised to find Mossberg made 30-30's similar to Marline 336's and also the model you have which is like a Winchester. Learn something new every day.

I would give the Mossberg a go if I was buying a 30/30.... I have only seen the tactical version which I have no time for.
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.
