New Rossi 92

Post by Echo154 »

Boy Howdy, picked up my new 92, Rossi 44 mag, 20” stainless! She cycles smoother than expected. Took her apart and cleaned her thoroughly. The bolt was fairly good, very minimal machine marks, I smoothed it a little with thousand grit wet sand paper…..thank god I got Steve’s video, took me awhile trying to get the ejector in. Added a stainless follower and Steve’s ejector spring. She cycled 200 grn GDHP and federal 185 grn JSP without hesitation. Wood is “ok” an ugly kinda reddish finish but the grain looks good. Not bad fitting on the wood, the bottom of the stainless butt pad is about a 16th proud but I’ll take care of that when I refinish the stocks. I’ll get some pictures up tomorrow and give a quick range report…weather permitting.

Good to hear. I have an itch for their 454. One of these days...

.
Several family members own Rossi 92's, and so do I - they seem about as good as any other mid-range commercial offerings out there. Occasionally fit/finish or other cosmetic issues, but no more than the Remlins or Japchesters I've seen. The one time I had a warranty issue it was solved quickly and well.

I don't care for the WInchester 92 design versus the Marlin 94 design, when it comes to short-action leverguns, because the Marlin has so much more robust parts, requires less 'fitting' to run, and the side-ejection is nice. But the Win/Rossi 92's are smooth and slick and really nice to shoot. Just harder to replace parts or work on.

Redneck, I have shot one, I’m glad it didn’t have a true crescent butt plate  it would make a nice light brush gun in bear country for sure! I’ve got an 1895 SBL in 45-70, but a light 92 would be easier to carry!

Pfft. My Japchester 1886 in 45-90 pushing 405 grain hardcasts at 2400 FPS has some noticeable recoil with the factory steel butt plate. I doubt a 454 will ever come close in regards to recoil.

But yes, I want a Rossi in 454 to go with my SRH in 454. Wouldn't feel under gunned for any animal in North America with that pair.

From my experience, if I had to choose between a 300 Win mag and 454 Casull with similar barrel lengths for taking an elk at 300 yards or less, I would take the 454 every time.

I much agree, you have to make them a pair, I bought the 92 in 44 to match my stainless SW 629! Now I’ll have to look into a blued or case color 92 in 45 colt to go with my Colt SAA! Hard to find the color case and usually they go for more than I want to pay! Momma won’t understand or be happy…….but I’m sure you do!

45-90 just realized what caliber you had…….I always wanted an 86 in 50-90….just because! I’m a big bore fan. I have a 22 rifle pistol combo and 1 9 mm and 1 10 mm, but 4 1911 45s, 1 1911 50 gi, 1 45-70, 1 M1A and a 45-110 sharps :D

Whoooobuddy! Just tried 10 dummy rounds each of RD TLC432-265 FP and Keith 255 grain bullets. Both cycled and ejected without fail! I did have to give the RD a little more roll crimp ( 1/4 turn) to get the to run flawless. Now to play with powders and loads :D

Nice buy with that 44. I've owned 6 Rossi 92s, two in 44 mag. That 200gn gdhp is designed for the 44 special and is a great home defence bullet. It's one of the few jacketed bullets that expands well subsonic, opens to 65cal+ under 900fps impact and just be aware fragments before 1300. I used them for subsonic shooting small and medium hogs at night close range over baits.

For hard hitting it's hard to go past the 240xtp which the 44 can push 1800 with the right load. I never needed hardcast bullets ,that xtp load hammered the biggest hogs I ran into.

There are some threads on here from a few years ago on 'pairs' that are kind of cool...

This is a recent one:

But there are older ones too...

Three Rossi '92 live in my safe, with occasional trips being let out into the wild. 2 .38/.357 carbines and a 45 Colt in a "Short Rifle" configuration. It's probably the favorite of the three.
