OS you wouldn't be playing much golf over here we are in the middle of Storm Éowyn with strong winds.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Wow! Blowin' up a little chop by the look of it.
Not much wind here, but a little cold for golf. Probably wouldn't want a white ball either.
I haven't got to camp in 2 weeks. Now I'm back at work. Haven't done much. Cleaned up a little down cellar. I did some work on the sink drain in the bathroom.
Sounds like I'm living wrong! Of course, it's been pretty cold too. I'm getting soft in my old age.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Speaking about playing golf with a white ball in the snow..... I don't like shooting automatics in the snow although I've done it many times. You have to be quick about recovering your brass because the hot empties melt their way through the snow never to be found again.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Yup.
To this day, I have the hardest time getting good practice and enjoyment shooting autos. Being a lifelong handloader, I cannot ignore the brass. Every time I fire, i try to watch where the brass is going. It doesn't matter how many thousands of brass I have either. Needless to say, this poor habit doesn't help practice or training. And God forbid I lose a round or two. I will look for an hour! In the winter, I would shoot in a spot that was plowed and icy. It was actually better than summer.
I finally had to decide to pick a chambering to not load. I chose 9mm, and I just leave them on the ground. I even bought a 1911 in 9mm so I could shoot and enjoy it. My Dillon has a complete setup for 9mm too. I have a bunch of brass even. I have never loaded one round of 9mm.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I know how you feel. I have an even dozen centerfire auto pistols from 9mm and 40 S&W to .45ACP and I very seldom shoot them. I spend more time walking around in circles than shooting, hoping that a change in the angle of the sunlight will make a lost empty show up. It's just not worthwhile. That applies to leverguns to a lesser extent since empties are generally deposited in a smaller area than the distance they're thrown by autos.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
It's the biggest reason I shoot revolvers more now. I took a 20 year break from .357. Now it's probably my most used cartridge.
For some reason, I don't have as big an issue with lever actions and losing brass. I still shoot them more than any other rifle action.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Over the years I have mostly favoured non ejector shotguns, not only are they cheaper and less likely to go wrong but they save me the chore of picking up the empties. When I tried to take up metal detecting my spent .22 rim fire shells drove me nuts but all my other brass got picked up.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Sad day for me.
My buddy that ran the old timey gun shop where I grew up passed away last night. He was 82, and his health had been declining the last couple years to the point he couldn't run the shop anymore.
I still stopped in to see him at home, as he lives just up the road, but not enough.
This really hits me hard. I know I've talked about him here before, but a kinder man could not be found. I've known him since I was in seventh grade, when my dad bought me my first 94 carbine from him. I spent so much time out there just hanging out and soaking up all I could. There was no internet, and the books and magazines I had access to didn't say much about the stuff I was interested in. He gave his knowledge and patience freely, and as a friend. I dont know how or why he put up with me as a stupid kid. I could take any gun in the shop and try it for a while. He let me use his machine tools for projects, gave me free labor and expert gunsmithing free of charge. Mostly we just hung out around the wood stove with the old crowd and visited. Forty five years weren't enough.
Thanks for everything Ken. I'll miss you.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Sorry to hear that Jay, a buddy like that is a rarity for sure and all the more sadly missed when they are gone. You were blessed that you got to know each other and I'm sure he was pleased with the way that seventh grader turned out. Rest in peace Ken.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thank you, my friend. I knew it was probably coming but that doesn't make it any easier. He was kind of like another dad. My "gun dad" so to speak. I let my sons know last night, as they knew him well too.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I'm sorry to hear about your friend and mentor, Jay. You were obviously as special to him as he was to you. You were both lucky, I'd say.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thank you Walt. I really appreciate the kind thoughts.
At some point, I'll have to go see his wife. I'm not looking forward to that.
Luckily for her, he had touched so many people that she will always have help if she needs it. There was a steady stream of visitors at the house after he closed the shop. She is just as nice as he was.

I'm thinking you will be surprised by how well she's doing. Don't hesitate to go.....you'll both be pleased with your visit.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
My condolences, irreplaceable friends.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I had an old friend, an elderly man who taught me a lot about coyote hunting in particular. He died about 15 years ago but I kept up a friendship with his widow, reliving old times, his adventures and their long marriage. She passed six or seven years ago and I certainly counted her as a friend of mine. She was from Iceland and was a grand old lady.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thank you OS. Yes, very true.
You're a good guy Walt. I bet your friendship meant a lot to her. And to your friend looking down from above.

I didn't feel a thing up here. Maybe the dogs did?
Been sitting around all week. Kristy has been pretty sick, so ive been staying close. Think she caught the crud going around from our granddaughter that she watches a couple days a week. At least she hasn't had a fever.

Jay, I wish Kristy well. I know about having a sick spouse and worrying that they're as comfortable as you can help make them.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thanks Walt! Much appreciated. It definitely sucks. It always demonstrates how useless and inept I've become from being under her care all these years.
I do what I can, however.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
OS I like the Bowie and the 1860 but always favoured the Navy grips over those on the Army...
I often used to swap revolvers with a guy at the range who always had Colt Army and I always had my Navy's. I'm still looking for a shootable antique cap n ball that I can afford just to beat our crazy gun laws.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Just the opposite for me. While I like the looks of the Navy grip, the Army grip fits me much better. I always wondered why they didn't use the Army grip on the SAA.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Jay I can guarantee that you have larger hands than me, I even thought the grips on my little .31 Pocket Colt were not too small.. ,,
As my son said the other day we are both built more to 19th. century standards so old guns seem to fit better....

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Haha yeah. I really struggle with Blackhawks and Colt SAAs. Not as much the overall size of my hands as I have a long reach. Many older handgun designs are a bit short coupled for me. A Smith N frame fits me quite well. As an example, I can reach my finger out and wipe the safety on an AK without breaking my grip.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Never had a Navy. Bought the 1860 because my great and great great grandfathers were in the Civil War and thought it might relate back to that. Have a couple stainless Old Armys but only have shot the 1860 once. Too much trouble in my book.
Love the N frame. Have about 11,000 between these two. The Smith is a .44 Spl, my favorite revolver cartridge.
74 here today.

Btw, 6 checks in here every once in a while.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I have 2 629s. A 6" 629-1 and a 3" round butt 629-2.
I've tried to send him a couple PMs at different times, but they won't send.
I sent a message on FB a while back, and a PM on the Colt forum. Never heard back from anything. Hopefully all is ok with them. At this point, I'm hoping all is well and he is just pizzed at me.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Jay, I seriously doubt that his absence has anything to do with you; you were his best friend on this forum. I think he felt that the forum was kind of a controlling factor in his life and he just grew increasingly uncomfartable with that. I think he felt he wasn't getting the respect he deserved given his experience and knowledge. I've written him a couple of times with no response too.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thanks Walt.
Yeah I get it. I have a few friends here, but for the most part I keep a low profile. I try and check in every day but sometimes I don't get to. I know winters are tough on Six. Just miss hearing from him.

I haven't tried to contact Six I guess he will either come back or stay away and find something else to waste his time on...
I spend too much time here even though I have very little to contribute but I do have a few dozen spammers to zap every time I log on...
I do however miss Six's input as Walt said his knowledge is invaluable and his sense of humour is second to none... come back Jack.
We'll even get you a new Tee shirt......

That's Way too cold for my old bones. We're in a heat spell at the moment; it was 37° this morning at 4 when I got up. It should get up into the 60s tomorrow and Tuesday. I'm planning to go shooting on Tuesday. One of the benefits of the warmer temps is that it's a whole lot easier to hammer my gong posts into the ground.

Rear wheel bearing went out on on the Jeep Patriot 105,280 mi. Put on the third set of tires and first rear brake job, nothing left there.

50,000 on the first two sets of tires, 105,280 mi on the brakes.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I usually run mudders, so I never see that kind of mileage. But I will definitely get close with the Falkens on my Gladiator. They are fantastic tires.
Seems like I clean up snow every day. No big amounts, but seems like between and inch to 4 inches over and over.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Hey Walt. Yes, Kristy is definitely over the hump now. She is back at work and doing much better. Our middle son is real sick now. He was going to the doctors today. Thinks he has pneumonia.
The snow.....
For little amounts of light snow, I just go out and scrape it. It's good exercise, saves wear and tear on the blower, and it's Zoey's favorite thing in the world, to be out in the cold when I'm scraping (besides Jeep rides).
For bigger amounts, as I've already stated, I use a snowblower. They do a neat job, and make it easier to do walkways or tight places. Plows are great, but some places are set up to plow more than others. A blower takes up less space in the off-season also. I have a Honda 928. It's a 2010 I think. I take real good care of it, cause it has to be depended on. If your mower doesn't run, the grass gets long. If the blower doesn't run, you have a problem.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Glad you are in a better place, my friend. The land we live on is very important to our happiness.
Yeah, when it gets cold, all the sap and moisture in the wood freezes up. When you hit it with an 8lb maul, it pops it apart with authority. Except if there are knots.
Some things don't change.....
When it's cold in the woods, you can hear the trees snapping from this freezing of the wood. Sometimes it's as loud as a rifle shot. It may not get cold enough there for you to experience this phenomenon. I never thought of that, as it's just normal here. It's 10 below this morning. More snow coming today.

I believe I have Kristy working her magic to thank for my change of fortune...
Jay. It was probably 1962/1963 when we had a winter that could freeze trees, I was just a youngster with a single shot .410 I really enjoyed that winter but I don't particularly want to see another one that cold and lasting as long.
