Anybody like fire blued parts on guns? Always liked the early fire blued triggers, screws , spring covers , etc on older firearms. With practice it can be applied pretty easily with small torch.
Had an old T slot cleaner that already had a coarse polish . I hit it with 320 and scotch brite wheel to brighten it up. Decreased it and used small mapping torch to wick flames until had a nice even peacock blue.
Of course Nitre blue salts is easiest to maintain correct temps to do smaller parts easier.

Yes... front & rear bands on my old '55 Marlin Texan had a case of leprosy when I first got it. I used the same basic method you described and finished with an oil quench. They have held up real well over four years of hard use.

When I had my old charcoal forge with hand-cranked Champion blower, I loved watching the colors move.

I've got an old Champion Forge and Blower Co portable forge on legs .Someone lined the steel fire pit with refractory cement and dated 1938 in it.

I've not learned to do it yet, but I think it's beautiful.
