shooting pigeons

Now this is pretty funny. I wonder what caliber and guns they used in the cull? Being in England and all their red tape for guns - it is pretty funny they went to this operation. The hawks they tried to use were probably not hungry anymore.

Reminds me of shooting pigeons in the country side with my 22 as a kid.

I have problems with these bunny huggers all the time. My job in environmental health involves pest control. We had to shoot pigeons on a hospital roof because feathers and other debris were finding there way into an operating theater. The first guy to protest and threaten us was a Surgeon!!!!!

Ahhh, for the good old days when you could pop down to the chemist's and pick up a bottle of strychnine to drizzle onto your breadcrumbs....

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you? 'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games.
They call it impiety
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel* or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strych'nine
We feed to a pigeon.
(It just takes a smidgin!)
To poison a pigeon in the park.

Bet they were air guns. I do some farms that get plagued with them in winter. We use a torch and air rifle in the buildings.

[quote="Old Ironsights"]Ahhh, for the good old days when you could pop down to the chemist's and pick up a bottle of strychnine to drizzle onto your breadcrumbs....

Just a heads up a lot of birds thrive on strychnine.

I believe you could kill 10 coyotes with the same dose that it would take to kill a single sparrow.

In the old days I knew a few busy poultry farmers that would inject strychnine in a live chicken's breast and stake it out for a troublesome coyote, stake out means to tie a 4 or 5 foot cord to the chickens leg and fasten it to a peg in the ground, along with food and a water bowl, sometimes the chicken would be there a week before the coyote came back.

good hunting

I'm only an EMT, but IIRC there are many things that will cause no permenant harm if injected muscle tissue, but if are ingested (or inhaled) will cause rapid death...

Yeah, I thought it might be a bit extreme to burn down the barn over a few birds.

As a kid we used to do it the same way in big grain barns,

Sometimes we would catch the ones with leg bands( Racer's that got lost )with our hands .

Pigeons are easy at night with a flashlight.

I can remember jumping 20 -- 30 feet off of the cat walk into a mountain of wheat with a air rifle in one hand and a gunnysack in the other.

great fun

We shot so many birds and pigions out of the barn, when I was a lot younger, the cats would follow us the 150 yards to the barn when we would leave the house with the air rifles.

If it were allowed, I would spend every weekend in the off season shooting pigeons & seaguls with a pellet gun...

Filthy birds. Good target practice.

Still, a flame-thrower would be effective!!!

"The decision to call in the marksmen was condemned as “cruel and illegal behaviour” by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which complained to the tournament organisers and the police."

So, PETA folks don't mind sitting in, and eating on, bird-poop? Pretty much confirms what I've always thought about them - they are as nasty as many of the vermin they try to protect!!!
