Tang sight with rear sight?

Post by LeverGunner »

I have a Marble's tang sight for my Winchester 1892. I finally got around to putting it on and messing with it, and while it's usable with the rear sight in place, the rear sight is in the way. I removed the rear sight and installed a slot filler.

I've seen a lot of older leverguns that had both sights though, and it must have been common practice for folks back in the old days to just ignore the rear sight.

Ideally I'd like to find a folding rear sight, similar to the Marlin folding sight, but.. I don't like the Marlin sight much. I do like the Marble No. 67, but of course it doesn't fold.

The Marble No. 95 is... ugly, or uglyish. I'm considering getting one and turning it into a semi-buckhorn with my dremel and then having it finished... but I ain't sure yet.

Anyone have thoughts about it all?

I use rear barrel sights and tang sights together on several old rifles I shoot. What I do is set the tang sight elevation to zero at distances further than I have the barrel sight adjusted to. This way the tang sight focuses above the barrel sight and the two don't interfere.
I did this when I started hunting with my old rifles and used the barrel sight out to 100 yds., and sighted the gun in for 150 yds. with my tang sight. Worked really well for me as I could judge 150 yds. and use the tang sight, and anything 100 yds. or closer the barrel sight.

Filler is the way to go….why fool with that obstruction as I want a clear view of what I’m shooting …….if you want to get fancy you can buy a regular rear sight and cut it off so you have a “diamond shaped filler…..just touch it up with cold blue……..I have dozens of old Winchesters and except for the safe queens they all have original tang sights as the new ones are sloppy. There’s ways you can tighten them up but that’s for another day,

A good tang sight will shoot as good as a scope up to 200 meters or so……….and beyond if your eyes are young…. In my early days of shooting in the mid seventies it was tradition to be in the woods on opening day of squirrel season and popping squirrels out of the top of tall oaks with a second year 1892 in 32-20….still have it and still shoots just as good after 5,000 rounds……….never a part replaced……..

It’s always best to find an original sight as they hold their value and appreciate. The stem on the newer Lyman’s will fall off unless you make them so they don’t annd the Marbles anre OK with the wind age but are too sloppy for my needs…… also a good idea to keep several dozen front sights of varying heights. I put the front sight on to get point of impact at 50 yards with the tang sight all the way down…this way you have no where to go but up….a dab of white paint helps to count the turns….——006

What Marlinman93 said :D

If you're not going to ever shoot past 100 yards don't bother with a tang site, just stick with the barrel sight. Keep life simple.

Except for or a couple early Winchester that came to me with tang & bbl sights, any that I put a tang sight or a scope on, I removed the factory rear sight & installed a blank. If it got a scope I also removed the front sight & got screws to fill the holes.

It might be an old wives tale, but I was told an open dovetail could weaken a barrel from interrupted harmonics. I've never seen any documentation of such a claim, but... at the very least, an empty dovetail is unsightly. *

I use my leverguns primarily for silhouette shooting and all have a tang sight, either MVA or Marble's. I try to get the sights as low as possible to the barrel so as to maximize available elevation adjustment. This requires removing the rear barrel sight, and I always use a filler in the dovetail. Original sights are carefully bagged and labeled in case they are needed later.
