Arts & Crafts - iteration 2 (paper cartridge box)
Well, a few weeks ago I finally got around to making a wooden box for black powder cap & ball revolver paper cartridges. This is something I've wanted to do for years. Here is my post on my first attempt:
http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=64482
It was a lot of fun, and really not that much work. However, though pretty much historically accurate, I realized that I did not want a "one and done" cartridge box. I got the idea for a reusable one from capandball.edu. So here are the pictures on iteration 2:
Here's the front of the box. I smudged a little glue on the right side, which I'll have to scrape off later.
It doesn't look that much different than the original version. The box, however, is not nearly as long. I used a plastic tray from a .45 ACP box of bullets as a template for the holes. They are much closer together than the original, so the overall length is not as long.
Here's the top of the new box. I flipped the top and bottom labels, and corrected the measurement on the top label.
The bottom now says "Ysabel Ammunition Works". I figured the load information was more important for the top, and besides, I put "Ysabel Ammunition Works" on the back as well.
Here is the new back cover:
The wooden box itself is made of oak, since it will be reused often. I figured a nicer wood was in order.
The label is on a cardboard sleeve, which just slides off. No label to tear through, so both box and label can be reused over and over again.
The box of the wooden box is the same; the hinge is a nice heavy craft paper.
I drilled out the lid versus single holes for a bit more flexibility, since the paper cartridges can very a bit.
Here's a view from the top. The smaller diameter hole is on the left, and holds seven percussion caps.
Here's the box with one of the paper cartridges pulled out.
Here you can see the old box (left) compared to the new one (right):
And here they are, the new one in front of the old one. You can really see the size difference here:
I may make a few more tweaks to the design, but it's getting close!

Jay, I've been to Civil War reenactments where your cartridge boxes would go like hot cakes ......
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

Looks good! I must confess.....I envy your computer skills. I sure wish I could make stuff like the cover you've made for that box.

Considering I've wanted to do this for 2 or 3 decades, and just now finally getting around to it, I don't think that's the worry!jnyork wrote: You appear to have WAY too much time on your hands.
Actually, the "wood work" is less than an hour, not including the staining over the course of a couple days (5 minutes at a time). It took about an hour, multi-tasking, to work out the label. Gluing was also done while multi-tasking.
