Six, you've discovered the "secret" also. The 38-40 is the dimensionally most consistent of all the old cartridges. That is why its my favorite. From gun to gun, brand to brand, it is very easy to get to work.
The 44's are another matter all together, and in my limited experience, much more finicky. But I will say that this seems to be more so with old guns. Im kinda surprised at that Colt though. You'd think something they made experimentally to test would be close to nominal dimensions so they could get some baseline data.
