"Who is Ted Williams...?"

#1 Post by AJMD429 » Thu Oct 24, 2019 6:00 pm

A college kid asked me that a couple weeks ago, after seeing his name on a baseball bat. I never followed sports, but knew a little about him from friends who knew of his military service, so I decided to do a little cell-phone research while standing around waiting to shoot (we were shooting a new handgun his friend had bought).

Here's what I specifically sent him a link to - there are plenty of articles on Ted Williams, but this one put it in PERSPECTIVE....

THIS is what more of the SnowFlake Generation needs to learn about. Even as a geezer, I learned more about Williams by reading the article.

The current crop of arrogant and spoiled "athlete stars" need seen for what so many of them are (and the ones who aren't jerks need to be recognized as a cut above their cowardly peers).

Too bad that so many athletes of today are not even close to his example of how to be a man.

I always liked the story when Mister Williams had Curt Gowdy's saturday abc network film crew down to the florida keys to film him fly fishing for tarpon......

Mister Williams hooked a real trophy that breached and tail walked just like it knew it was going to be on the telly......

The tarpon broke the leader and Mister Williams asked if they got some good shots.....

The film crews in the other two boats were idle and not even paying attention to the action......

They had not yet even loaded any camera with film ! ......

Mister Williams was a success at anything he put his mind to......in this case both fly fishing and swearing.....

Like many, many American boys I grew up idolizing Ted Williams. Heck, I think he is probably the reason my favorite cereal is still Wheaties. But then, back then pretty much all of the folks on the Wheaties boxes were folks to respect. Ted just stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Thanks for the lesson. I am 62 and remember Guns with Ted Williams on them, but I didn't really know who he really was.
I have renewed respect for him now.
