"Why do 3% of Americans own 50% of the Guns...?"

#1 Post by AJMD429 » Tue Oct 15, 2019 8:21 pm

Someone asked this question, and here is my answer, for what it's worth:

"Probably 3% of the population might own 50% of antique cars, or rare coins, or autographed football jerseys, or any other collectible.

Probably 3% of the population might own 50% of the MIG welders, track-loaders, grain-drying bins, or any other tool.

Example: I’ll bet I own at least 30 pair of Vice-Grip pliers, scattered around the house, barns, truck, etc., and I know at least two friends who would probably say the same, so 90 pairs in the hands of 3 people. So are there 97 other people I know who between them only own 90 Vice-Grips…? Probably. I know at least a dozen people who don’t own a pair, and many people who are more organized probably only have one pair, or maybe a couple.

Guns are collectibles AND tools, so why would the dynamic be any different…?

I have 20 or more 3/8th inch drive ratchets. I know several people who do not own any. Just illustrating your point.

I know people who do not own even one firearm. As long as they do not try to tell me that I shouldn't own a firearn, I won't tell them that they should.

Then there are some folks who have so many firearms that they have forgotten how many they actually have. I think the head of the NRA is in that boat.

I was tempted to say "because they can't afford to buy 60% of the guns..."

The 3% that have the 50% are just trying to make up for the 97% that have the other 50%. Hmmmmm

I am 99.9995% sure that the statistic quoted came from someone's imagination.

If not, it was derived from incomplete data.

No one knows who owns all of the guns, and that my friend is what helps keep us a free society.

I had to think on this for a couple of days.

I believe this to be a matter of exposure. There are a number of Americans, perhaps an increasing number, that have not been exposed to an activity where firearms are used in a safe, entertaining, and constructive manner. They haven't been trained to appreciate guns either as tools or as objects of art. Their only exposure is what they see on the evening news, and that source is generally negative.

Guns are mysterious. Guns are an unknown. Guns seem to be associated with evildoing and evildoers.

There are a limited number of Americans who are not afraid of or intimidated by guns, and who are willing to take the responsibility required to own, collect, or maintain them. There are, of course, those gun-owners who only own a gun because they 'have to', but it's a certainty that there are a lot fewer of that class than there used to be.

I'm not certain that any of this is a new phenomenon.
