SOLD: Swedish rolling block, "sportered"

#1 Post by Bill in Oregon » Fri Apr 12, 2019 3:55 pm

Here is a military rolling block built on license from Remington by Carl Gustav in 1871, and subsequently sportered by some old Swedish hunter or farmer before finding its way to the United States. Wood is sound, with a few worm holes for character that you can point out to your firearm-snob friends, saying "I'll bet your gun doesn't have these!" Buttplate has some pitting but serial matches the receiver and barrel. Action is tight, and the trigger excellent. Barrel is 32 3/4 inches long and the rifle weighs just over 8 pounds. The bore is dark and "salt and pepper" freckled for the first 10 or so inches with a pit or two, but then very good and bright on out to the muzzle. The Swedes used very deep rifling, which accounts for why this one put three in 2 inches just doing "let's see if it blows up" testing offhand at a box at 25 yards.
Caliber is 12.7X44, but don't let that scare you. You could just about call it .50-70 Government "short." Just trim Starline .50 Alaskan brass from 2.1 to 1.71 inches, and add your black powder to just be compressed when seating the bullet. This rifle seems to like the Lee 515-450, as cast. Load using off-the-shelf .50-70 dies.
I will include 40 Starline .50 Alaskan cases, most of them untrimmed, and a couple of dozen of those Lee bullets.
Asking $375 shipped with the brass and bullets. Not looking for trades.
This may not be the prettiest horse in the barn, but after you see how gentle she runs, you might just fall in love. Great choice if you have long wanted to scratch the blackpowder cartridge rifle itch.
